Response of Br14 Rice to Nitrogen and Sulphur Fertilization in BAU Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to determine the yield response of BR14 rice variety to N and S fertilization. Four levels of N viz. 0, 60, 90 and 120 kg ha^-1combining with four levels of S viz. 0, 10, 20 and 30 kg ha^-1were studied in a randomized complete block design. The yield response to N was curvilinear showing its peak at 90 kg^-1whereas response to S was linear. The response curves for N and S, and their interactions were mathematically determined.

Objectives:

To determine or develop the yield response of BR14 rice variety to N and S fertilizers under BAU, Farm situation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from 5 January to 3 May 1992 to determine the yield response of BR14 rice variety to N and S fertilization. The land was medium high belonging to the old Brahmaputra Floodplain characterized by non calcareous dark gray floodplain soil. The experimental soil was silty loam having pH of 6.5, 0.83% organic carbon, 0.076% total N, 13 ppm available P, 0.20 me% available K and 12 ppm available S. The variety used in the experiment was BR14. The treatments included were: N₀S₀, N₀S₁₀N₀S₂₀N₀S₃₀, N₆₀S₀, N₆₀S₁₀, N₆₀S₂₀, N₆₀S₃₀, N₉₀S₀, N₉₀S₁₀, N₉₀S₂₀, N₉₀S₃₀, N₁₂₀S₀, N₁₂₀S₁₀, N₁₂₀S₂₀, N₁₂₀S₃₀, The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design having three replications. The unit plot size was of 5m x 4m and hill spacing of 25 cm x 15 cm was maintained. The experimental crop was grown with proper agronomic care and management. Nitrogen and S were applied through urea and gypsum, respectively. Urea was applied in 3-equial splits at 15, 35 and 55 days after transplanting whereas the total amount of gypsum was incorporated to soil during final land preparation, the blanket dose of 60 kg P₂O₂ and 40 kg k₂O ha^-1 were applied to every plot from TSP and MP, respectively. The crop was harvested at maturity. The data on individual plant characters were collected from ten randomly selected hills in each unit plot. The grain and straw yield was recorder from the whole plot harvest. The data were statistically analyzed by the computer package program, M-stat.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of the present study, we can infer that the variety BR 14 under BAU soil condition is responsive to N up to 90 kg ha^-1. The S response seems better at 30 kg ha^-1 but arriving at the final conclusion higher levels of S should be considered in future study. The equation 3 may be used in calculating the levels of N and S to be applied in achieving a definite yield goal.
