Study on the Physio-morphological Characteristics of Lime, Lemon and Other Sour Pulp Citrus Fruits of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Characteristics of lime, lemon and other sour pulp citrus fruits of Bangladesh were studied during the period from December, 1984 to June, 1986. The plant and fruit characteristics of 28 cultivars/lines comprising 6 species were studied and described.

Objectives:

To characterize of the species/cultivars/land races and for obtaining information as to the number of species both edible and non-edible citrus fruits that are regularly cultivated or grown wild in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken during December, 1984 through June, 1986. Extensive tours were undertaken in all the important growing centres of these fruits. Whenever a new species/type was found scion wood and fruit were collected. The plant characters such as growth habit, density of foliation, thornyness, presence of wing and leaf size of that tree(s) were noted on the spot. Characteristics of these fruits such as weight, size, shape, rind thickness, number of seed, weight of seed, juicyness (Ufo), total acid (%), TSS (%), and flavour were determined in the laboratory. The total acid and TSS were estimated by electrically operated acid analyser and hand refractometer respectively. The flavour was recorded by organoleptic taste and a panel of judges.
