Evaluation of Cowdung, Poultry Manure, Rice Straw and Farmyard Manure as Supplemental Nutrient Source for Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was initiated at BRRI farm Gazipur on Chhiata clay loam soil (AEZ 28, land type-Medium High Land) in Boro 2000-2001 to find out a suitable integrated fertilizer management package for rice-fallow-rice cropping sequence. The treatments were organic control, Cowdung, poultry manure, rice straw, farm yard manure and chemical fertilizer. All the organic sources except rice straw were applied @ 2t/ha (oven dry basis). Rice straw applied as 1.5 t/ha. In the T. Aman season BRRI dhan31 and in Boro season BRRI dhan29 was tested. Organic sources with chemical fertilizer were applied in Boro season as fresh response and subsequently residual response was observed in T. Aman season applying only chemical fertilizers as IPNS, STB and AEZ basis. Application of chemical fertilizers increased grain yield from 3.27 to 3.95 t/ha and there was no significant difference among the STB, IPNS and AEZ based fertilization was found in T. Aman. In Boro season, significant interaction of organic materials and chemical fertilizers application was found on grain yield. Without chemical fertilizer application, CD and FYM treated plots produced identical yield while PM treated plots produced the highest 4.90 t/ha yield and RS produced the lowest 2.92 t/ha grain yield. On the other hand, STB, IPNS and AEZ based chemical fertilizer application without organic produced similar grain yield. Poultry manure with chemical fertilizer produced the maximum 7.46 t/ha grain yield. It was evident from the findings that organic residues not only contribute to yield but also increased the efficiency of chemical fertilizer.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was initiated at BRRI farm Gazipur on Chhiata clay loam soil (AEZ 28, land type-Medium High Land) in Boro 2000-2001. The soil contained total N (0.16%), available P (19 ppm), exchangeable K (0.13 meq/100g soil), available S (28 ppm) and available Zn (4.00 ppm). The treatments were organic control, Cowdung, poultry manure, rice straw, farm yard manure and chemical fertilizer. All the organic sources except rice straw were applied @ 2t/ha (oven dry basis). Rice straw applied as 1.5 t/ha. Organic sources with chemical fertilizer were applied in Boro season as fresh response and subsequently residual response was observed in T. Aman season applying only chemical fertilizers. In the T. Aman season 2005, the residual effect of four organic materials along with a control was compared. In the sub-plot the fertilizer doses were as follows: control (No chemical fertilizer); chemical fertilizer as STB (NPKSZn @ 67-5-41-3-0 kg/ha); IPNS and AEZ based (NPKSZn @ 70-10-40-5-0 kg/ha. The tested variety was BRRI dhan31. In the Boro 2005-06, organic material’s plots were divided into four sub-plots to accommodate four chemical fertilizer treatments-Control (no chemical fertilizer); chemical fertilizer as STB (NPKSZn @ 101-9-64-6-0 kg/ha); AEZ and IPNS basis. The test variety of Boro season was BRRI dhan29. Urea was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from 5 m² area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.

At Gazipur clay loam soil (Rice-Fellow-Rice cropping pattern) organic residues not only contribute to yield but also increased the efficiency of chemical fertilizer. In this soil poultry manure (2 t/ha, oven dry basis) along with STB chemical fertilizer produced 7.46 t/ha grain yield of BRRI dhan29.
