The experiment was conducted to observe the effect of planting techniques and methods of land preparation on growth and yield of rice at the BRRI Research Farm, Gazipur during Boro season in 1999-2000. It was observed that line transplanting x wet land preparation needed the highest time (24.87man-dayha-1) for planting followed by line transplanting x dry land preparation. The highest number of laborers (14.67man-dayha-1) was used for 1st weeding in the sowing dry seed x dry land preparation and the lowest time was in the line transplanting x wet land preparation. But for 2nd weeding, the highest number of labor (13.71 man-day ha-1) was required in sowing germinated seed x dry land preparation which was statistically similar with sowing dry seed x dry land preparation and sowing germinated seed x wet land preparation and the lowest time (7.73 man-day ha-1) was in line transplanting x wet land preparation. Harvesting time showed almost a similar trend of interactions except spreading seedling cuttings x dry land preparation. The growth and yield for the interaction effect was different for the studied parameters. The tallest plant (92.72cm) was obtained due to line transplanting x wet land preparation which was similar to sowing germinated seeds x wet land preparation and the shortest plant (86.85 cm) was produced in the spreading seedlings cuttings x dry land preparation. Bearing tillers hill-1 was also the highest (13.25) in line transplanting x wet land preparation followed by line transplanting x dry land preparation. The lowest bearing tiller hill-1 (4.78) was found in spreading seedling cuttings x wet land preparation. A reverse trend was found in case of non-bearing tiller hill-1. Grains panicle-1 was the highest (101.3) in line transplanting x wet land preparation and most of the interaction of this trait was statistically identical and the lowest was in spreading seedling cuttings x dry land preparation followed by spreading seedling cuttings x wet land preparation. Grain yield was the highest (5.93tha-1) in line transplanting x wet land preparation which was statistically identical with sowing dry seed x wet land preparation and the lowest grain yield (2.35 tha-1) was found in spreading seedling cuttings x dry land preparation. Straw yield (8.4tha-1) was the highest in line transplanting x wet land preparation followed byline transplanting x dry land preparation and the lowest 3.1 t ha-1) was in spreading seedling cuttings x dry land preparation.

  • To observe the effect of planting techniques and methods of land preparation on growth and yield of rice at the BRRI Research Farm, Gazipur.

The experiment was conducted to observe the effect of planting techniques and methods of land preparation on growth and yield of rice at the BRRI Research Farm, Gazipur during Boro season in 1999-2000. The experiment was consisted of four sowing techniques, viz., i) sowing dry seeds, ii) sowing germinated seeds, iii) spreading cuttings of seedlings in the prepared land and iv) line transplanting and two methods of land preparation viz., i) dry land preparation and ii) wet land preparation. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 16m2 and BRRI dhan28 was used in the experiment. Fertilizers, such as P2O5 and K2O were applied at the rate of 60 kg and 70 kg ha-1 from TSP and MP, respectively at the final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied @100 kg ha-1 from urea into three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT) and sowing (DAS). All other cultural operations were done as when necessary.Yield and yield components data were collected from an area of 10m2 at maturity of the crop and time requirement (man-day ha-1) for sowing, spreading seedling cuttings, transplanting, 1st weeding, 2nd weeding and harvesting were recorded during the period of operations. Eight hours work for a laborer was considered as one man-day. Collected data were analyzed by following the standard statistical procedure and the mean differences were adjudged by LSD.

Bearing tiller hill-1 was the highest  in transplanted plots followed by dry seeded and the plots of germinated seed sowing. The lowest bearing tillers hill-1 was found in the plots of speeded seedling cuttings. Almost a reverse trend was found in non-bearing tillers hill-1. The longest panicle was obtained in line transplanted plots and other three planting methods were statistically identical for this parameter. Grains panicle-1 was the highest in transplanted plots which were similar to the crops stand for sowing germinated seed and the lowest grains panicle-1 was found in the crops produced from spreading seedling cuttings. Grain yield was the highest n the transplanted plots followed by the crops produced from sowing germinated seeds and sowing dry seeds. The lowest grain yield was obtained from the spreading seedling cuttings. Straw production was the highest  in the transplanted plots.  In case of dry land preparation, more time was required for 1st weeding and harvesting operations and also the rest of the studied parameters including grain and straw yield were higher in the wet land preparation.
