Effect of Poultry Litter Incorporation of Different Ages on Wetland Rice Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur in T Aman 2005 and Boro 2005-06 to find out age of poultry litter (PL) decomposition as suitable organic fertilizer for wetland rice cultivation. In Boro different ages of poultry litter (PL) @ 3 t/ha (oven dry basis) was applied in the field with 50% STB fertilizer dose. The treatments were as T₁=no fertilizer, T₂ = fresh PL, T₃ = 30 days old PL, T₄ = 60 day old PL, T₅= 90 day old PL, T₆ = 120 day old PL, T₇ = farmers preserved PL, T₈ = 50% STB dose. After Boro crop the field was remained fallow in Aus season and then T. Aman crop was grown with only 50% STB dose to observe the residual effect of the poultry litter previously applied in Boro season. BRRI dhan31 was used as test crop. The design of the experiment was RCB with 3 replications. Poultry litter preserved under shed condition irrespective of time gave higher yield than farmers preserved. However, 30 days old PL gave significantly higher yield than other ages of PL. Perhaps nutrient release from 30 days old decomposing litter matches with the crop growth phase which might create congenial environment to have higher yield. In T. Aman season shaded preserved PL also showed a good residual effect on grain yield over farmers preserved PL and 50% STB dose alone. The results revealed that preserved PL is good conjunctive organic manure with chemical fertilizer to obtained higher rice yield.

Objectives:

To find out the duration of poultry litter decomposition as suitable organic fertilizer for wetland rice cultivation

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur in T Aman 2005 and Boro 2005-06. The soil of the experimental field was clay loam in texture having pH 6.55, organic matter 1.62%, total N 0.11%, available P 4 ppm, exchangeable K 0.17 meq/100g soil, available S 4.3 ppm and available Zn 1.6 ppm. In Boro different ages of poultry litter (PL) @ 3 t/ha (oven dry basis) was applied in the field with 50% STB fertilizer dose. The treatments were as T₁=no fertilizer, T₂ = fresh PL, T₃ = 30 days old PL, T₄ = 60 day old PL, T₅ = 90 day old PL, T₆ = 120 day old PL, T₇ = farmers preserved PL, T₈ = 50% STB dose. After Boro crop the field was remained fallow in Aus season and then T. Aman crop was grown with only 50% STB dose to observe the residual effect of the poultry litter previously applied in Boro season. BRRI dhan31 was used as test crop. The design of the experiment was RCB with 3 replications. Urea was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from 5 m² area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.
