A field experiment on integrated nutrient management for Wheat-Mungbean (MB) – Transplanted Aman (T. Aman) cropping pattern was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station experimental farm, Pabna in Rabi 2000-01 to T. Aman 2003. The objectives of the experiment were to find out an optimum and economic fertilizer management package for Wheat-Mungbean-T. Aman cropping pattern and effect of mungbean residue on T. Aman rice. Five different treatment combinations of organic and inorganic fertilizers were tested. The STB fertilization with MB stover incorporation in soil produced the highest rice equivalent yield (REY) 8.01 t/ha followed by farmers’ practice with MB stover incorporation and cow dung + IPNS based chemical fertilization with MB stover incorporation. Inclusion of mungbean crop between wheat and T. Aman crop increased 21-28% and incorporation of MB stover in soil increased 5-6% REY per year.

To find out an optimum and economic fertilizer management package for Wheat-Mungbean-T. Aman cropping pattern and effect of mungbean residue on T. Aman rice.

A three year long field experiment on soil fertility management with the Wheat-Mungbean-T. Aman cropping system was initiated in Rabi 2000-01 at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS) experimental farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Pabna. The soil characteristics at the experimental sites was silty clay loam in texture, pH 7.4, organic C 1.3%,  total N 0.12%, available P 22 ppm, exchangeable K 0.24 meq/100 g soil, available S 10 ppm and available Zn (DTPA) 12 ppm. Wheat (first crop) was grown in the RCB design with three replications using five treatments - absolute control (T1), AEZ based fertilization recommendation (BARC 1997) (T2), soil test based (STB) fertilizer recommendation for high yield goal (T3), cow dung (CD) @ 5 t/ha (Oven dry basis) + IPNS based chemical fertilizer doses for HYG (T4); and farmers' fertilization practice (FP) (T5). The second crop mungbean was grown in each plot without fertilizer. For the third crop (T. Aman), each plot was divided into two where from mungbean residue was either retained (a) or removed (b). So, design of the T. Aman became split-plot where fertilizer in the main plot and mungbean stover in the sub-plots. The CD was applied once a year in wheat at land preparation. The test variety for wheat, mungbean and rice was Sourav, BARI Mug-2 (Kanti) and BRRI dhan39, respectively. The experiment was continued up to T. Aman 2003. During the three years of experiment, three wheat, three mungbean and three T. Aman rice crops were grown following standard production technology for respective crop.

Wheat yield in the control plot (T1) varied from 0.69 t/ha to 1.12 t/ha over three years which was 0.98 t/ha to 2.52 t/ha with AEZ dose (T2). Yield with STB dose (T3) was 1.17 t/ha to 2.49 t/ha. In 2001, T1  T2, and T5 (FP) gave statistically identical mungbean yield. The lowest yield was found in cow dung + IPNS (T4). In 2002, pod was not formed due to heavy rainfall at flowering stage. In 2003, similar result of grain yield with first year was observed. The stover yield of mungbean (MB) varied from 2.77 (T4) to 4.42 (T3), 3.70 (T2) to 5.31 (T1 and T5) and 3.69 (T5) to 4.27 (T3) t/ha in 2001, 2002 and 2003, respectively. For a given fertilizer management, the grain and straw yield with Mungbean (MB) stover incorporation was greater than without MB stover incorporation. The highest (8.01 t/ha) rice equivalent yield (REY) was obtained with treatment T3a (STB with MB) followed by T5a (7.98 t/ha) and T4a (7.83 t/ha). The MB residue incorporation in soil increased REY by 5-6% per year. The highest MBCR was obtained with T3b (2.11) followed by T3a (2.05). Treatment T3a is the most profitable fertilizer package for Wheat-Mungbean-T.Aman cropping pattern at ARS, BARI, Pabna and resembling areas of the experimental site.
