Field Performance of in Vitro Plantlets Against Normal Suckers of Banana (musa Sapientum) Cv. Champa

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A trial on the performance of tissue culture (TC) derived plantlets against conventional (CON) suckers of champa banana (Musa sapientum) was conducted at the fruit farm of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BAR!) during the period from April, 1996 to May, 1997. The tissue cultured plants and conventional sword suckers were 30 - 45 and 45 - 60 cm in height, respectively during planting in the field on 2 April, 1996. Plants of both types flowered in the month of November-December, 1996 and the fruits were harvested in April-May, 1997. The results were found statistically insignificant in all the parameters of growth, shooting, harvesting and yield. Fruit characteristics were also insignificant except the edible portion (Edible portion of TC banana was 73.13% and normal banana was 76.69%). Numerically, in most of the parameters the TC plants performed better than the control.

Objectives:

To find out the performance of in vitro champa banana in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

A study was carried out at the fruit farm of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from April, 1996 to May, 1997 to compare the performance of TC plants of champa with CON suckers. The in vitro plantlets of champa banana was produced in Tissue Culture Section, HRC, BARI. The local leading dessert cultivar 'Champa' collected from fruit farm, HRC, BARI, ten CON suckers and ten TC plants were planted in the field on 2 April, 1996 at a spacing 2m x 2m. Cowdung, TSP, gypsum and zinc oxide were applied in pit @ 10, 250, 250 and 5 kg per pit, respectively. The plants were side-dressed with urea and MP @ 700 and 750 kg per plant, respectively, split in six equal instalments starting 60 days after planting, weeding, de suckering, irrigation, mulching and propping were done as and when necessary. Data on different physio- morphological characters along with yield potentials such as days to shooting, days to harvesting, weight of hands, number of hands per bunch, number of fingers per hand, weight of finger, length and breadth of fruit, edible portion, total soluble solids (TSS) and other characteristic features were recorded and analyzed statistically. TSS was measured by hand refractometer while taste was recorded by organoleptic test through a panel of judges.
