The main focus of the study was to identify the Indigenous Technologies (ITs) being used by the farmers in fisheries and livestock components and to examine the extent to which the identified ITs were being used by the farmers. The study also explored the relationship between farmers' selected characteristics (independent variables) and their extent of use of the identified ITs (dependent variable). Data were collected from 120 farmers from six selected villages of Begumpur and Titudah Unions in Sadar Upazilla under Chuadanga District of Bangladesh. By using interview schedule, nine ITs were identified in fisheries and 25 ITs were identified in livestock components. The highest proportion of the respondents in respect of use of ITs belonged to low user in fisheries components and medium user in livestock components. Some important ITs which were identified in fisheries components included using barshi / jal (Net), applying rice kura (husk) in the pond, applying cow dung in the pond, and applying oil cakes in the pond. On the other hand some of the important ITs which identified in livestock components were using earthen container to eggs, using ashes to eggs, using paddy of husks to eggs, using cooked rice mixed with turmeric powder or kerosene to feed poultry birds, using oyster and snails, and using mixture of naphthalene, turmeric powder, garlic and mustard oil to livestock.

1. To identify the indigenous technologies (ITs) used by the farmers in fisheries and livestock sectors, 2. To determine the extent of and perception about the use of ITs by the farmers in fisheries and livestock sectors, 3. To explore the relationship between the extent of use of ITs and selected characteristics of farmers in fisheries and livestock sectors, and 4. To determine the selected characteristics of the farmers of the study area.

Six villages (Hijalgari, Rongohail, Dehi, Bouldia, Barh Soula and Chato Soula) under Begumpur and Titudah Unions in Sadar Upazila of Chuadunga District of Bangladesh were purposively selected for the study. Firstly a list of the farmers comprised 1195 of the villages were collected with the help of Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAOs). To make a representative sample, 10% of the population was selected following proportionate random sampling technique and thus the sample so drawn was 120. The data were collected from the selected farmers through personal interview using a pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. In addition to that, reserve lists of 20 farmers were prepared for use in case the respondents included in the sample who were not available at the time of data collection. Measurement of the variables - The independent variables of the study were age, respondent education, family size, farm size, total family annual income, cosmopoliteness, organizational participation and media exposure. The dependent variable of the study was the extent of use of ITs by the farmers in fisheries and livestock components. Attempt was made to assess the extent to which these ITKs were being used by the farmers of the study area. However, a 4-point scale was used to measure the extent of use of ITs by the farmers. The weights were assigned as 3 for 'frequently', 2 for 'occasionally', 1 for 'rarely' and 0 for 'not at all'. Thus score on the "extent of use of ITs" for a farmer was calculated by the summing up the scores for all enlisted ITs. However, besides the "extent of use of ITs" score calculation for 120 respondents, Indigenous Technology Use Index (ITUI) was also analyzed by the following formula: ITUI = N1 x 3 + N2 x 2 + N3 x 1 + N4 x 0 Where, N1 was number of farmers used the ITs frequently, N2 was number of farmers used the ITs occasionally, N3 was number of farmers used the ITs rarely, N4 was number of farmers not at all used the ITs. The independent variables of the study such as age, education, family size, farm size, duration of work/day and annual income of the farmers were measured by putting numerical scores. The other characteristics such as cosmopoliteness, organizational participation and media exposure of the study farmers were measured through scales.

It was revealed from the study that 9 ITs were identified and used by the farmers in fish production and 25 ITs were identified and used in livestock sector by the farmers in the study area. It was also disclosed by the present study that the identified ITs were goats & birds control, algae clean, catching fish, food supply to fish, increasing food & plankton in the pond, hatching & preserving eggs, food supply to ducks, insect & diseases control of poultry, curing kujer gha & yolk gall of livestock and curing wound of tongue & hoof of livestock etc. Therefore, it may be concluded that the identified ITs were more favorable for hygienic and pollutant free food supply for fisheries and livestock components. The large family size increased economic crisis in a family that influenced any person to use more and more ITs in livestock component as a cheap solution. More aged farmers are less venturesome. So old age farmers do not want to take risk of using scientific knowledge and they depend on using ITs in fisheries components. At the same time educated farmers could read printed materials and could understand messages. On the other hand educated farmers are usually cosmopolite. So, a farmer of outside his arena might have more opportunities to contact with various people, extension agents and exposure to various information media that may increase the knowledge level of the farmers. All these education, cosmopoliteness that is increase knowledge level influence a farmer to be more aware about the adverse effect of using scientific knowledge regarding environmental degradation and influence them to use more ITs i fisheries components.
