Response of Hybrid Varieties of Tomato to Npk Fertilizers in the Valley of Chittagong Hill Tracts

Objectives:

1. To find out the yield potentiality and economic feasibility of locally available hybrid varieties of tomato with NPK fertilizers in the valley of Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during the period from November to March of 2002-03 to find out the yield potentiality and economic feasibility of locally available hybrid varieties of tomato with NPK fertilizers in the valley of Chittagong Hill Tracts. The treatments consisted of 4 varieties, first 3 hybrids and last one OP variety as check, namely V1 = Dania, V2 = Frontier, V3 = Jamuna and V4 = BARI tomato 9, and 4 NPK fertilizer doses at the rate of 0-0-0 (F0), 230-80-100 (F1), 276-100-150 (F2), 323-120-200 (F3) kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The experimental land was sandy loam having a pH of 5.4, organic mater 1.81%, total microjehldal N 0.090%, Olsen P 6.40 μg/g of soil, ammonium acetate K 0.14 miliquivalent/100 g of soil. The unit plot size was 1.2 m × 3.2 m, and 32 days old seedlings of these varieties were transplanted on 16 November 2002 by maintaining the spacing of 60 cm × 40 cm. The crop was irrigated with water-can at seedling stage up to 7 days to ensure good stand of crop. The land was manured as a blanked dose of cowdung @ 10 t/ha. The NPK fertilizers were applied as urea, TSP and MOP. The total amount of cowdung, TSP and one half of MOP was applied at final land preparation. Urea and the rest of MOP were applied in two equal splits as top dressing at 15 and 35 days after planting by ring method. Bamboo sticks were used to staking the plants. All the intercultural operations like two stem pruning, weeding, irrigation and mulching were done as and when necessary. Data on plant height and number of fruits per plant were recorded from five randomly selected plants. The weight of individual fruit, fruit length and fruit diameter were recorded from 10 fruits randomly selected from individual plot and mean value were calculated. Yield of all plots were taken and converted it into ton per hectare. The data were statistically analysed by the computer package program of MSTAT-C and means were compared by using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance. To find out the most profitable treatment, economics of different treatments was worked out in terms of net returns by taking into account the cost of cultivation and gross return per hectare. The cost of cultivation and gross returns of the crop were calculated on the basis of the local market rates for inputs and farm gate price of outputs. Benefit cost ratio (BCR) was calculated as follows: Benefit: Cost (BCR) = Gross return (Tk/ha) ÷ Total cost of production (Tk/ha).

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that BARI Tomato 9 was the best than the available hybrid varieties of Tomato in association with a dose of 276-100-150 kg/ha of NPK fertilizers plus 10 t/ha of cowdung. So, this combination would be recommended for Chittagong Hill Tracts to cultivate Tomato profitably.
