A field experiment was conducted in the experimental farm of the Department of Soil Science of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during T. aman season of 2006 to evaluate the effects of different rates and sources of sulphur on the yield, yield components, nutrient content and nutrient uptake of rice (cv. BRRI dhan30). The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. There were seven treatments consisting of four levels of sulphur (0, 8, 12 and 16 kg S ha-1) applied as either SSPSingle Superphosphate.or gypsum. All plots received 100 kg N, 20 kg P, 60 kg K and 2 kg Zn ha-1 from Urea, TSP, MOP and ZnO, respectively. The grain and straw yields as well as the other yield contributing characters like effective tillers hill-1, panicle length, filled grains panicle-1 and 1000 grain weight were significantly influenced due to application of sulphur. The highest grain yield of 5293 kg ha-1 and straw yield of 6380 kg ha-1 were obtained from 16 kg S ha-1 applied as gypsum. The lowest grain yield (4200 kg ha-1) and straw yield (4963 kg ha-1) were recorded with S control treatment. The application of sulphur significantly increased N, P, K and S uptake. The overall results suggest that application of sulphur @ 16 kg S ha-1 as gypsum was the best treatment for obtaining higher grain yield as well as straw yield of T. aman rice.

1. To evaluate the effect of different rates of sulphur on the yield and nutrient uptake by BRRI dhan30, and to finding out the suitable dose and source of sulphur for BRRI dhan30.

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from August to December 2006 to evaluate the effect of different rates and sources of sulphur on the growth, yield, and nutrient uptake of rice (cv. BRRI dhan30). The soil at the experimental field belongs to the Sonatala series under the AEZ-9, the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The soil was silt loam in texture having pH 6.3, electrical conductivity (EC) 0.108 dS/m, organic matter 2.09%, total N 0.15%, available P 14.12 ppm, exchangeable K 0.118 me/100 g soil and available S 10.12 ppm. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. There were seven treatments including a control. Sulphur was applied both as single superphosphate (SSP) and gypsum at the rate of 8, 12 and 16 kg S ha-1. The size of unit plot was (4 × 5 m2) and the number of total plots was 21. The basal recommended doses as N, P, K and Zn were 100 kg N as urea, 20 kg P as TSP (supplemented by SSP), 60 kg K as muriate of potash and 2 kg Zn as ZnO. All fertilizers except urea were applied on the day prior to transplanting during the final land preparation. Urea was applied in three spits. Forty five day old seedlings was transplanted on 10 August 2006 and was harvested on 9 December 2006. Various intercultural operations were done whenever required. The pre-planting soil samples were collected from 10 spots of experimental plot at a depth of 0-15 cm and chemically analyzed. The crop was harvested from each unit plot at maturity. The yield and yield contributing characters were recorded. N, P, K and S contents of rice grain and straw were determined following the standard methods and the nutrient uptake was calculated by multiplying the nutrient content with total biological yield of the crop. The collected and calculated data were analyzed statistically and the mean results in case of significant F-value were compared by the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
