A study was carried out to assess the conservation of plant genetic resources at Baldah Garden, Wari, Dhaka and to develop a taxonomic inventory of it’s ornamental plants. Findings reveal that the garden contains a total of 416 plants species representing 271 genera and 142 families. Plants were grouped into 17 categories according to their major uses viz. bamboos(3) , beverages and narcotic(2), cactus(29), ferns(9), ficus(7), fodder(1), food(1), fruits(28), medicinal(103), orchids(28), ornamental(173), palm(16), rubber(2), spices(3), timber(9) and vegetable(1). On the basis of habits, there were 115 trees, 162 shrubs, 108 herbs and 31 climbers were recorded. In case of listed ornamental plants, there were 173 families, 105 genera and 56 species. Rubiaceae was the largest family with 19 species under 6 genera followed by Liliaceae the second largest one with 18 species and 7 genera. Araceae was the third largest family with 13 species and 8 genera. Among all the genus of ornamental plants, there were 31 families had single species each.

1. To assess the conservation of plant genetic resources of Baldha garden and 2. To develop a taxonomic inventory of it’s ornamental plants.

Study Area - The Baldah Garden is located on the outer are of Wari, in the southern sector of Dhaka city. This garden privately rose as miniature Botanical Garden in 1909 and not only contains a rich cross-section of Bangladesh’s flora but also covers a wide collection of world flora. Ecologically speaking the Baldah Garden has a rich diversity of landscapes/habitats ranging from narrow plain rolling table lands, shallow and deep pond, rectangular water lily pools on the both sides. The study area is located approximately in the latitude of 23.50`N and the longitudes of 90.40`E. The soil of Baldah Garden belongs to Old Meghna Estuarine Floodplain Agro-ecological Zone ‘AEZ-19’. The soil prevalent in the Baldah Garden is sandy loam to clay type with a pH of 6 - 7. Temperature ranges from 5.55 to 51.670C. The annual rainfall record reaches to approximately 1650 mm with humidity soaring to about 90 % during the rainy season. Surveying procedure - By using a standard format, all the plants holding of the Baldah Garden, Wari, Dhaka have been enumerated and inventoried. A taxonomic study was conducted to ascertain the plant diversity and conservation in the Baldah Garden. During the field study, observation was made on the plant habit, habitat, leaves, canopy, flowers, fruits, seeds, abundance of the plant, soil etc. An attempt was made in most cases to identify the plants on the spots. The plants which could not be identified on spot were preserved in herbarium with flowers and fruits for future study in the laboratory. Different standard taxonomic books were consulted for correction of scientific names and the relevant information. The data were collected during the months of January to May 2005.
