Performance of Some Cotton Based Cropping Patterns

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six cotton based cropping patterns such as (1) Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on ovember 15)- Yard long bean, (2) Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on Nov. 15) - Indian spinach, (3) Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on ov. 15 ) - Sesame (4) Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on Nov. 15)- Amaranthus - Amaranthus, (5) Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on Nov. 15) - Green manure crop and (6) Cotton - Fallow were tested in a field trial at Sripur Cotton Research Farm of Cotton Development Board (CDB) during three consecutive years from 2001 - 02 to 2003 - 04 under irrigated condition in the Madhupur Tract Soil of Bangladesh. All patterns were found better in terms of seed cotton equivalent yield, gross margin and benefit cost ratio over Cotton - Fallow pattern. The highest mean seed cotton equivalent yield (6.05 t/ha), gross margin (89543 Tk/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.61) were obtained from cotton / wheat - yard long bean pattern. Only cotton/ wheat - yard long bean pattern showed higher BCR over the sole cotton, while the other patterns failed to show higher BCR because of higher cost..

Objectives:

To fit wheat in cotton based cropping pattern as relay crop as well as other crops in fallow period.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Central Cotton Research Farm of Cotton Development Board (CDB), Gazipur during three consecutive years from 2001 - 02 to 2003 - 04 under irrigated condition. The farm belongs to the Madhupur Tract of Agroecological zone 28. The soil is more or less uniform with loam or clay loam. Soil is acidic in nature and red in colour. Weather data of the location of experimental period are shown in the table 7. Sowing and harvesting of cotton and other crops of the pattern were done depending on weather condition mainly rainfall and temperature. There were six treatments viz. (T₁): Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on November 15 ) - Yard long bean, (T₂): Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on Nov. 15 ) - Indian spinach, (T₃): Cotton /Wheat (relay sowing on Nov. 15 ) - Sesame, (T₄): Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on Nov. 15) - Amaranthus - Amaranthus, (T₅): Cotton / Wheat (relay sowing on Nov. 15) - Green manure crop and (T₆): Cotton - Fallow. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 6 m x 4.5 m. Cotton seed (var. CB 10) was sown as a first on 3rd week of July in every year. Wheat was relayed on November 15 and other crops of the patterns were sown sequentially. Cotton plots were made weed free and mulched by Niri before wheat relaying in mature cotton on November 15. Recommended agronomic practices of the crops of the patterns were followed when required. Yield of cotton and wheat were recorded excluding the side effect but yield of other crops were recorded on whole plot basis. On the other hand yield contributing characters of cotton and wheat in the pattern were taken from randomly selected ten plants of each plot. These recorded data were analyzed by MSTAT. Yield and yield contributing characters of cotton. Cost - return analyses were done on the basis of local market price of the commodities and followed the system of Basak and Khurram. 2001. Equivalent yield was calculated according to Bandyopadhyay : Seed cotton equivalent yield = (Yield of particular crop x Price of particular crop) / Price of seed cotton. Yield, equivalent yield and cost - return analyses of cotton based cropping patterns.

Achievement/Findings:

Crops like yard long bean, Indian spinach, sesame and amaranthus may be grown successfully in early Kharif season under irrigated condition in cotton based cropping pattern for more benefit. Among the patterns tested cotton / wheat- yard long bean was found profitable than that of sale cotton. So wheat could be relayed in cotton followed by yard long bean in cotton growing areas of Madhupur Tract.
