Some Aspects of Biology of Puntius Sophore (hamilton) Collected from the Mouri River, Khulna, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Length–weight relationship, condition factor (K), relative condition factor (Kn), fecundity and egg diameter of Puntius sophore (Hamilton) were estimated from 120 individuals collected from the Mouri river of Khulna district, Bangladesh during 7th August to 25th October 2006. The total length (LT) ranged from 4.9 cm (body weight, W=1.47 g) to 9.20 cm (W=12.84 g) for male and 6.8 cm (W=5.08 g) to 9.9 cm (W=14.25 g) for female. The logarithmic relationships of LT-W and LS-W were strongly positive as estimated, and. The mean K and Kn were 15.03±2.20 and 1.07±0.40, respectively. The relationships of LT-K and LT-Kn were insignificant ( and). The mean bilobed gonad weight (WG) was 1.36±0.438 g. The mean ova diameter was 6.5±0.51 μm, 6.5±0.68 μm and 6.31±0.56 μm at the anterior, center and posterior portion of both lobes, respectively. The fecundity F of P. sophore varied from 743 to 4013 (LT: 7.0-9.9 cm, W: 5.3-14.3 g). LT-F and W-F relationships were positive but weak. WG-F relationship was positively strong. GSI of P. sophore was 15.25±3.80 in August.

Objectives:

1. To determine the condition and relative condition factor, fecundity, gonad weight, average egg size and GSI of P. sophore.

Methodology:

Physical setting: The River Mouri originates from the Beel Dakatia, a larger water basin in the north from Khulna city. It fed by water from large number of khals and water channels. From the Beel Dakatia a water channel runs south, passing on the west of the village Teligati. At Aranghata area it forms the western boundary of Khulna city corporation and continues southward up to the river Rupsha. At Lata Faharpur, the channel takes the name Khudi Khal. At the north-west of Rayer Mahal, the water channel is joined with another khal. Running between Chak Mathurabad and Choto Boyra, the channel enters Sona Danga area at the city inter-district bus terminal from where it takes name Mouri River Collection of the sample: One hundred twenty individuals of P. sophore were captured fortnightly from different fishing spots of the river Mouri between 7th August and 25th October, 2006 using cast net. Twenty individuals were collected in each sampling period. All samples were frozen until processing. Measurement of total length, standard length and body weight: The clean washed, blotted and air dried individuals were measured, weighed and examined for various biological parameters. Total length (LT) and standard length (LS) were measured to the nearest centimeter (cm) on a horizontal line from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail and from tip of the snout to the base of the caudal fin, respectively. Total weight (W) was registered to the nearest gram (g) with three decimal fractions. Statistical relations were measured with the aid of computer using SPSS version 12.0 software package. Measurement of ovaries: Ten gravid individuals were identified and taken for analysis based on enlarged and yellowish abdomen of the female for each sampling period. After dissection with sharp blade, ovaries were washed with clean water and dried off by removing excess fluid with the help of blotting paper. Individual ovary was measured to the nearest gram (g) with an electric balance. The two lobes of ovary were measured separately. Diameters of the eggs were measured in microns (μm) by using an ocular micrometer under a compound microscope. Egg samples were taken from both lobes of the ovaries. Randomly selected eggs, taken from anterior, middle and posterior parts of each lobe were measured.
