Classification of Different Source of Irrigation Water in Tista Flood Plain Ecosystem of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to classify the quality of irrigation water in Tista Flood Plain soils of Mithapukur thana under the district of Rangpur. 50 water samples as well as the same number of irrigated and adjacent nonirrigated soil samples were collected for chemical analyses. The pH values (6.9 to 7.6) indicated that the waters were almost neutral to slightly alkaline. Grading based on EC and SAR reflected that all water was “good” to “excellent”. In respect to hardness, water was “moderately hard” to “hard” class. All water was free from RSC and belonged to the “suitable” category. The soils of Mithapukur thana were slightly acidic in reaction (pH = 5.0-6.1). The increasing tendency of EC in irrigation soils of the study area might lead to soil salinity problem in future.

Objectives:

1. To identify the wells of polluted water , and 2. To classify the water according to irrigation, drinking, livestock and industrial standard on the basis of data generated out of polluted water irrigation on soil properties.

Methodology:

From agricultural point of vies, irrigation water quality is an important factor for successful crop production, in view of the above points, soil and water samples were analyzed chemically (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS). Collection of water samples - Fifty water were randomly collected from 17 selected unions to represent most of the areas of Mithapukur thana, Rangpur, during January and February, 1996. Amongst the collected samples 12 were from deep tubewells, 30 from shallow tubewells and 8 from river water. The detailed information of different irrigation sources have been presented in Table 1. The sample was collected by one litter air tight plastic container and three to fore times rinsed for each time of samplaying.
