A detailed survey was carried out on the livelihood status of the people in Beel Dakatia at Dumuria, Phultala and Daulatpur thana under Khulna district. The survey was conducted on 150 people of 15 villages. From the survey it was found that out of 150 people 123 were married and the rest of unmarried. The community indicates that 31-40 age groups made maximum strength and majority of them were Hindus (68.67%). It was found that 36% of them can sign and the percentage of school going children were high (75%), among then 54% were boys and 46% were girls. In the study area, 118 (78.67%) of people lived with nuclear families and highest households were 7-8. Sixty two (62%) people lived in Katcha house and the construction materials were Golpata and Mud. 64% could be use electricity. The result also showed that 68% people’s main occupation was fishing and agriculture. It was found that the highest number of fish farmers (66%) had 0.84 hectare land. 86.40% fish farmers worked all the year round. Majority of people (74%) had secondary occupation. Intake of fish in a month was highest for day’s meal and 92% used deep tubewell water for drinking. 103 (68.67%) households were used closed pit latrines. Majority of them (34.67%) were affected through fever and 49.33% people took treatment from quack. 38% of them borrowed money from the co-operatives Bank and 49% (73) earned 6001 to 8000 taka per month. A total 123 women were randomly selected from my study area among them 62% can sign only. Among them 13.82% engaged in net making, 16.26% in integrated culture, 8.13% in feed making and feeding , 18.69% for basket making for fish, 19.52% in weed removing from gher and 23.58% worked in NGO’s or co-operative bank. 93% female’s economic condition was better than before. 42.28% women worked with family member. 23.58% women worked above 8 hours. 24% (30) of their children participate in their work. Thus to achieve better social structure, the Government and its development partner needs to re-orient their programmer and implementation an affirmative action for women.

1. The present study was designed to find out the factors affecting the people’s livelihood pattern in terms of income, primary and secondary occupation, health and sanitation and to find out the participation of female workers in homestead aquaculture and other activities in economic development.

Selection of the study area - The study was conducted at Dumuria, Phultala and Daulatpur thana of Khulna district. The study was conducted for a period of 14 (fourteen) weeks (4 months) from October 2007 to January 2008. Field survey and observation - For the collecting data on various aspects of livelihood issue, field surveys were made in the fifteen villages of Dumuria, Phultala and Daulatpur thanas of Beel Dakatia at Khulna district. Five (5) villages were randomly selected from every thana, ten (10) households were randomly selected from each village. Total one hundred fifty (150) households’ information was randomly collected from the study area of Beel Dakatia. Questionnaire survey - To collect data on various aspects of socio economic status and alternative livelihood of the selected area, questionnaire preparation is crucial important. Before the final questionnaire, a draft questionnaire was developed keeping in view the specific objective of the study. The draft questionnaire was pre-tested in the study area by interviewing with few fish farmers. The prepared questionnaire in shown in appendix. Data collection In order to fulfill the objectives of the study, relevant information and literature were collected from the two sources, which are the primary data were assembled through field survey at the village level by using a structural questionnaire. Data was collected by interview with the people and their wives. Further relevant information on livelihood status of people was collected relevant books, Govt. and non Govt. organizations like; Upazila fisheries office, Upazila land, youth development and statistical office, District fisheries office, Seminar Library, URP Discipline, Khulna University, Seminar Library, FMRT Discipline, Khulna University, and Central library, Khulna University, Khulna. Data analysis - Collecting information obtained from the survey were accumulated, grouped and interpreted according to the objective as well as parameters. Some data contained numeric and some contained narrative facts. The data when then presented in grapes and tabular forms. For processing and analysis purposes, MS Excel, MS Word has been used. Descriptive frequency distribution, Pie chart etc have been used for data analysis and presentation.
