Acceptability of seafood is linked essentially to its perceived social and religious barrier, and this clearly poses a challenge to policy makers in deciding what weight to attach to such a concern within a governance framework for the industry. Development of social acceptability of seafood in supplying diversified protein sources to the country people and in improving food security for the subsistence and disadvantaged group of people may have courageous and congratulatory prospects. Many more strategies could be fruitful in popularization, which if could be made judiciously with combined effort and patronage are believed to be worthy of making the seafood trendy in the home market of Bangladesh. Here attempts have been made to cover most of the strategies which have already been experienced successfully in different extension services and market promotions and some other hypothetical measures have been proposed. Among those, combined movement, different awareness and motivation programs, increasing corporate responsibilities, promotional offer in the market, offering seafood in food-for-education or food-for-work like programs, introducing seafood dishes in restaurants, popularizing through media, targeting students and their textbooks, seminars/workshops, fairs, supply of quality products with appealing presentation etc. have been highlighted. Since the popularization of seafood is a long-term process, so a catastrophic change of people’s mentality should not be expected, rather it will need time to achieve sustainability and eternality.

1. To develop social acceptability of seafood in supplying diversified protein sources to the country people and in improving food security for the subsistence and disadvantaged group of people may have courageous and congratulatory prospects.

Customs and traditions of Bangladesh are varied and fascinating. Some are rooted in its little-known prehistory and some have been carried through the ages by hundreds of aboriginal tribes who came to the subcontinent from many parts of the old world. Food habits are significantly co-related to these customs and traditions. Food Habits of the people of Bangladesh reflect the geographic and climatic conditions of the land as well as effect of social and religious customs. The deltaic plains of the country are drained by a large number of rivers and soaked by abundant rainfall round the year. These factors have through the ages made fishing one of the chief occupations of the people. Hundreds of species of fish are available in the rivers, canals, floodplains, haors, baors, ponds, lakes, estuaries and in the Bay of Bengal. Fish, therefore, figure prominently in the food habits of the people of this country. But the current situation says that local consumption of seafood is a great deal less rather than that of inland freshwater fishes in Bangladesh which has been mentioned earlier as well. Region of residence had been shown to be a significant independent factor associated with seafood consumption in his study area.  Food consumption patterns are strongly related to local food supply can best fit to establish the aforementioned finding. Again, consumption of fish is subject to many influences, including the socioeconomic background of consumers, their general food consumption patterns, their personal health status, and a number of attitudinal dimensions. Additionally, dietary behavior and its relative saliency in food choice also reflect such diverse determinants as socioeconomic factors, food preferences, beliefs, skills in preparation and local supply of fish products.
