This study was conducted to determine the effect of cooling on shallow tubewell engine in terms of fuel consumption, discharge and specific discharge (SPD). Two types of diesel engine (12 and 6 hp), two sizes of centrifugal pump (43 medium heavy and 43 light pumps) and one fixed well were chosen. The operating speeds of the pump were maintained 1250, 1320 and 1400 rpm. In standard cooling system. the temperature of water was 101-82oC whereas in direct cooling system, temperature of water in water tank fallen up to 460C. The fuel consumption of standard cooling was low compared to direct cooling For all types of engine and pump. In direct cooling system of 12 hp engine, fuel consumption was 5-17% higher than standard cooling. For 12 hp engine, the percent increase of SPD of standard cooling was 17- 23% compared to direct cooling of medium heavy pump. This increasing trend was also found in case of 12 hp engine with light pump. The fuel consumption was 4-7% higher and SPD was 5-8% lower in direct cooling compared to standard cooling for 6 hp engine with light pump. Six hp diesel engines with combination of 4" medium heavy pump followed the same role. Therefore, standard cooling was recognized as economical and environmental friendly compared to direct cooling.

(a) To find out the cooling impact of engine on fuel consumption, discharge and specific discharge.

(b) To determine the performance characteristics of pump on the basis of speed verses SPD and

(c) To generate useful information on advantage and disadvantage of standard cooling and direct cooling system in irrigation.

The methods and procedures were followed in the study to evaluate the performances of shallow tube wells on the basis of fuel economy and discharge for variation of cooling. Performance tests were needed to provide two kinds of information. The first is to establish the performance curve of Sp. discharge. The second type of the test was conducted to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of over cooling. Site selection. The study was conducted it Dayarampur village, Bishaka union of Phulpur thana in Mymensingh district. The experiment was conducted from 25 February 2003 to 25 April 2003. Field setup is an important stage for fulfillment of the objectives of the study. For field-testing, pumps were installed in local farmers crop fields. The test was conducted with the two sizes of centrifugal pump (43 medium heavy and 43 light) with combination of 6hp and 12 hp diesel engine. In all the cases, the pump was operated at 1250 rpm, 1320 rpm and 1400 rpm. To get considerable analytical data one fixed well were selected during the field experiment. This well was used by the local farmers since for long time for irrigation their crop field. The pump was coupled with engine through a B type v-belt. For comparison between standard cooling and direct cooling data related to prime mover (engine) speed (rpm), pump speed (rpm), temperature (exhaust pipe, water tank and lower vent), time to fill the water drum and fuel consumption were collected. The pump speed was measured from the pump shaft and the engine speed was measured from the engine fly wheel. Both the speed was measured by using an optical tachometer during the operation of the pump. To find out the cooling impact of engine on the pump specific discharge the temperature were recorded. Temperature of the water tank, exhaust pipe and lower vent were recorded for both standard and direct cooling system. An extended application of the principle of indicating engine efficiency by specific fuel consumption, ie fuel consumed in kw -hr/ litre was applied in this experiment to determine pump discharge (litre/hr) to the fuel consumed (ml/hr), so that it becomes understandable to the ordinary uses for economic analysis. Specific discharge is the discharge per unit fuel consumption and expresses as the quantity of water movement with respect to fuel used.

It is evident that for 12 hp and 6 hp engines with different types of pumps, the standard cooling/ manufactures cooling system is better compared to direct cooling. In direct coolin,. combustion does not occur properly. So, more fuel is required 10 operate pump, whereas pump capacity (discharge) and specific discharge are low compared to standard cooling. Standard cooling systems enhance engine life and farmers can get maximum output (discharge) with minimum fuel use.
