The Augmented Design as an Aid to Preliminary Selection of New Rice Hybrids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In hybrid rice programme, the paucity of the hybrid seed at the early stages of breeding programme restricts the use of replicated designs. An augmented randomized complete block design was used to assess the yield potential of 40 new rice hybrids. The hybrids were grown in unreplicated plots along with four check hybrids and locally adapted standard check variety in the replicated plots. Seven hybrids were identified as having yield potential and were advanced to further evaluation. The hybrids were also evaluated in RCB design with three replication and same set of checks to compare the efficiency of the former design. The augmented design proved useful in early generation selection of elite hybrids.

Objectives:

To assess the value of the augmented design as an aid to preliminary selection of rice hybrids.

Methodology:

Forty rice hybrids along with four check hybrids were evaluated as preliminary evaluation during boro season '94-95 in the experimental farm of BRRI at Gazipur. The experiment was laid out using the augmented randomized block design with three blocks. Each block was consisted of 15 entries. The check varieties were replicated three times in three blocks whereas the test hybrids were in unreplicated plots and were allocated randomly in each of the three blocks. The hybrids were also evaluated in randomized complete block design in the same season with three replications and same check hybrids/varieties. Each entry was planted in seven five-meter rows with spacing of 20cm x 15cm with two seedlings per hill. Fertilizer application and other cultural practices were standard as set for the evaluation of rice. Chemical protection against diseases and insects was minimized to a need-based level. Analysis of variance for the augmented design was done. Analysis of variance for RCB was done following standard procedure. Selection criteria for a hybrid was set as such that the hybrids which would give an yield advantage of 1 t/ha (15-20% standard heterosis) over the average yield of the standard check variety would be selected for further evaluation in the advance yield trial.

Achievement/Findings:

The use of augmented design for selection of rice hybrids in early generations is promising. Of the seven hybrids identified proved there worth high yields compared to the standard check. The single cross mating system can generate a large number of hybrids but strict selection in early generations may exclude potential genotypes. The augmented design with its flexibility to test many new treatments can accommodate moderate selection pressures of 10-30% in early generations. Such a selection strategy followed by testing of new hybrids in representative environments is likely to attain rapid progress in hybrid rice breeding.
