Effect of Different Levels of Sulphur on the Growth and Yield of BRRI Dhan41

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to know the effect of different levels of Sulphur on growth and yield of BRRI dhan 41 at Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during T. Aman season of 2007. The experiment was laid out following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). There were eight treatments with three replications. Recommended dose of fertilizers @ N 90 kg ha^-1, P 15 kg ha^-1, K 40 kg ha^-1 and Zn 2 kg ha^-1 were applied as basal dose from urea, TSP, Muriate of Potash and Zinc Oxide respectively and S @ 10 kg ha^-1 from gypsum was applied as per treatments. The treatments used in the experiment were T₀ (without S), T₁(50% RFD of S), T₂ (75% RFD of S), T₃ (100% RFD of S), T₄ (125% RFD of S), T₅ (150% RFD of S), T₆ (175% RFD of S) and T₇ (200% RFD of S). All yield contributing characters like effective tillers hill^-1, filled grains panicle^-1, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and 1000-grain weight except plant height and panicle length of BRRI dhan 41 significantly responded to different levels of applied S. The N, P, K and S content and uptake by grain and straw were significantly influenced by the application of different levels of S. Generally, treatment T₆ (175% RFD of S) performed the best result and T₀ (control) did the worst. From the above study it can be summarized that BRRI dhan 41 responded to the application of higher levels up to 175% of the recommended dose of Sulphur. This might be due to luxuriant uptake of S by rice. So application of higher rates (175% of the recommended dose) of S along with other fertilizers in the Bangladesh Agricultural farm soil may be done for profitable rice production.

Objectives:

1. To know the effect of different levels of Sulphur on growth and yield of BRRI dhan 41.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during Aman season of 2007. With a view to evaluating the effect of different levels of Sulphur on the growth and yield of BRRI dhan 41. The soil belongs to the Sonatola series under the AEZ of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The soil was silty loam in texture having pH 6.15, organic matter content 2.29%, total nitrogen N 0.186%, available P 7.89 ppm, exchangeable K 0.13 me 100-1 g soil, available S 10.73 ppm and CEC 13.78 me 100-1 g soil. The treatments include T₀ (without S), T₁ (50% RFD of S), T₂ (75% RFD of S), T₃ (100%RFD of S), T₄ (125% RFD of S), T₅ (150% RFD of S), T₆ (175% RFD of S) and T₇ (200% RFD of S). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Deign (RCBD) with three replications. The total number of unit plots was 24 and the size of unit plot was 4m × 2.5m. Total amount of N, P, K and Zn fertilizers was applied as a basal dose @ of 90, 15, 40, and 2 kg ha-1 according to different treatments during final land preparation but urea was applied in 3 equal splits. Thirty days old seedlings of (BRRI dhan 41) were transplanted in the experimental plots maintaining three seedlings per hill and plant spacing of 20 cm × 20 cm. Intercultural operations were done as and whenever required. At maturity, the crop was harvested. Grain and straw yields were recorded with 14% moisture basis. The grain and straw samples were analyzed for N, P, K and S content following the standard methods and the nutrient uptake was calculated by multiplying the nutrient content with the yield data. All the data were statistically analyzed by F-test and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

It can be summarized that BRRI dhan41 responded to the application of higher levels up to 175% of the recommended dose of Sulphur. This might be due to luxuriant uptake of S by rice. So application of higher rates (175% of the recommended dose) of S along with other fertilizers in the Bangladesh Agricultural farm soil may be done for profitable rice production.
