Stability Analysis of Wheat for Grain Yield Affected by Different Environment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genotype x Environment interaction for grain yield was determined by planting eight wheat genotypes in eight different sowing dates at Wheat Research Centre, Nashipur, Dinajpur over two consecutive years 2007-08 and 2008-09 under irrigated conditions using a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. GE interaction was analyzed using linear regression techniques. There was considerable variation for grain yield among both genotypes and environments. Stability was estimated using the Eberhart and Russell method. Stability analyses of variance showed highly significant (P<0.01) differences for environments, genotypes and environment (linear). Variety Sourav and Shatabdi have regression coefficient (bi) values close to unity (0.9 and 0.93, respectively) with small deviation from regression (s2di) and above average yield and thus possessed fair stability and wider adaptation over different environment. Variety Prodip and line BAW 1064 had regression coefficients greater than unity for grain yields with at per or above mean grain yield. Therefore, these genotypes are sensitive to environmental changes and can be recommended for cultivation under favorable conditions. According to the stability analysis, variety Sourav was the most stable for grain yield. The regression coefficient (bi) for Sourav was almost unity (bi = 1) and had one of the lowest deviations from regressions (s2di). It was also found that November 29 is the most optimum time of planting of wheat crop.

Objectives:

1. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the grain yield of promising bead wheat genotypes in different sowing time and to determine their stabilities using stability parameters.

Methodology:

Eight wheat genotypes (6 cultivars; Sourav, Gourab, Shatabdi, Sufi, Bijoy, Prodip and 2 advanced lines; BAW 1059 and BAW 1064) were evaluated at eight different dates of sowing (November 08, Nov. 15, Nov. 22, Nov. 29, December 06, Dec. 13, Dec. 20, and Dec. 27) for two successive years i.e., 2007-08 and 2008-09 at Wheat Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) Nashipur, Dinajpur, Bangladesh. The Agro Ecological Zone (AEZ) of the area is Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain (AEZ-1). Average weekly maximum and minimum temperature (^oC) of wheat growing seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09 have been recorded. The geographical position of the area is between 25°38´ N, and 88°41´ E, and 38.20 m above sea level. The experimental site was covering about 21% wheat areas of the country. The soil is sandy-loam and reaction is strongly acidic (pH ranges from 4.5 to 5.5). The organic matter content of the soil is <1.0% and fertility is poor. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 1.6×4m. Seed was treated with Provax-200 WP an effective seed treating fungicide consisting of Carboxin and Thiramon. The seed rate was used 120 kg/ha and fertilizer dose was 100-27-40-20-1 kg N-P-K-S-B/ha, respectively and was applied as per recommendation. All the experimental plots were agronomically treated alike. The yield was determined and expressed in ton per hectare (t/ha). Statistical analyses A combined analysis of variance was undertaken across the test environments. To characterize genotypic stability, linear regression model was also used.

Achievement/Findings:

As regard of grain yield genotypes and environment interaction was not-significant, indicating no genetic difference among genotypes for environmental response. Variety Sourav and Shatabdi have regression coefficient values close to unity (0.9 and 0.93, respectively) with small deviation from regression and above average yield and thus possessed fair stability and wider adaptation over different environment.
