Effects of Mulching and Levels of Potassium on Growth and Yield of Carrot

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was carried out to study the effects of three mulching practices viz. no mulch, water hyacinth mulch and polythene mulch and three levels of potassium viz. 0, 200 and 250 kg ha^-1 on the growth and yield of Carrot. The yield and yield contributing characters of carrot were significantly influenced by the application of mulching and potassium fertilizer. The highest marketable yield (53.40 t ha^-1) was recorded from the black polythene mulch treated plot and the lowest from no mulch treated plot. The highest marketable yield (51.50 t ha^-1) was obtained from 250 kg K ha^-1 treated plot and the lowest (42.10 t) with no potassium fertilizer treated plot. The interaction effect of mulching and potassium had significant effect on root yield of carrot. The M₂K₂ (black polythene mulch x 250 kg K ha^-1) treatment combination showed the highest marketable yield (56.09 t ha^-1) and the M₀NK (no mulch x no potassium) showed the lowest yield (36.77 t ha^-1). In respect of combined effect of black polythene mulch with the application of 250 kg K ha^-1produced the maximum marketable yield (56.09 t ha^-1). Polythene mulch with the application of 250 kg K appeared to be recommendable for carrot cultivation for the place where irrigation facility is not available.

Objectives:

1. The present experiment was conducted to study the effect of different levels of K fertilizers with different mulches on growth and yield of carrot.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Farm of BAU, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during the period of November 2000 to March 2001. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy loam in texture. It belongs to the Old Brahmapiltra Floodplain under AEZ 9. The land was medium high in nature. The organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable K and pH values were 0.91%, 0.81%, 20 ppm, 0.18 meq/100 g soil and 5.9, respectively. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with 3 replications. The whole experimental area was 17m x 9m, which was divided into 3 sub plots. So, there were altogether 27 sub plots. Mulching was assigned to the main plots; potassium was to the sub plots. There were three levels of each of mulching (No mulch, water hyacinth mulch and black polythene mulch and potassium (0, 200 and 250 kg ha^-1). The mulching were randomly assigned to the main plots and potassium in sub plots, respectively. Mulching was done after sowing the seed and potassium was applied at final land preparation. Recommended doses of TSP was applied at final preparation and recommended doses of urea was top dressed in two equal splits in ring method at 30 and 60 days interval after sowing the seeds. The land was made good tilth by several ploughing.
