The yield of indigenous potato varieties (IPV) has increased considerably during the recent years mostly due to use of relatively better quality seed potatoes and higher levels of production inputs. Positive selection is a recognized technology for improving the quality of planting materials, particularly of some vegetative propagated crops including potato. Positive selection is an approach of selecting only the healthy-looking mother plants, showing good production characteristics, for seed collection. The present study has demonstrated a remarkable improvement in the quality of IPV seed potatoes leading to significant increase in yield. Recommendation has been made for utilization of the technology both at IPV growers and seed producers level. Training need for the IPV growers as well as seed producers has been emphasized.

To assess the field performance of +ve, -ve and bulk seed potatoes of two promising IPVs collected during the previous year.

Seed tubers of two popular and promising IPVs, namely, Pakri-1 and Pakri-2, collected from Chichuria area of Kalai upazilla, were planted on 16 November 2012 at RDA farm in two plots at a spacing of 60 cm x 20 cm. The crop was raised following improved management practices. Severe roguing was done in each of the 25-decimal plots. Apparently disease-free and healthy-looking plants were selected ( +ve selection ), and marked with sticks. The rest of the plants, after roguing and +ve selection, were considered as –ve selected plants. Seed tubers of cv. Pakri-1 and Pakri-2 were also planted in an adjacent plot; and no roguing or +ve selection was done in the plot (bulk). Haulm pulling was done after 85 days of planting, and harvesting was done after 7 days of haulm pulling. Seed size tubers of 3 types (+ve, -ve and bulk) were collected, sorted, cured and stored in cold store. Field performance of the cold-stored +ve, -ve and bulk seed potatoes of 2 varieties of IPV was studied at ACI-RDA R&D Centre, RDA, Bogra during the 2013-14 season. A 2-factor experiment was set in RCBD with 3 replications. The factors and treatments of the experiment were as follows: Factor A (Variety of IPV) – 2 levels : Pakri-1 and Pakri-2 Factor B (Type of Seed Potato) – 3 levels : +ve, -ve and bulk seed potatoes Thus there were 6 treatment combinations. In total, there were 18 unit plots; 6 under each replication. The size of a unit plot was 4.2 m x 5.25 m. (22.05 sq.m), and there were 6 rows of plants in each unit plot. Each row accommodated 35 plants. Thus there were 245 plants in each unit plot (6 x 35), at a spacing of 60 cm x 15 cm. Sprouted seed potatoes were planted in well-prepared unit plots on 16 Nov 2013. Manures and fertilizers were used as per improved method of IPV table potato production (Siddique, 2013). Irrigation was applied as and when needed; and pesticides were sprayed as per schedule. No roguing or haulm pulling was done. The crop was harvested on 24 Feb 2014, after 100 days of planting. Pre- and post-harvest data on yield components and yield were recorded in a data sheet. The data were processed and analyzed as per standard procedure. The ultimate objective of the trial was to assess whether a significant improvement in seed quality could be achieved in IPV through +ve selection.

1.The positive selection technique was found to be an effective tool in improving the quality of seed potatoes, particularly of indigenous potato varieties (IPVs). 2.The yields of Pakri-1 and Pakri-2 varieties of IPV were 38.2 and 31.2 Mt/ha, respectively, at RDA, Bogra when +ve selected seed potatoes were used; compared to 27.8 and 22.7 Mt/ha, respectively, when bulk seed potatoes were used. 3.Considering the findings of the present study, it is recommended that positive selection technique could be utilized for the improvement of IPV seed quality both at IPV growers and seed potato producers levels, as an effective, easy and low cost technique.
