Aquarium Business: a Case Study in Khulna District, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was carried out to provide an initial assessment of aquarium fish trade in Khulna district of Bangladesh. A total of 12 shops were established in this district where 29 aquarium fish species were found of which 12 species were bred for fry production. In the present study, Red Parrot was the most expensive species (1,000-1,500 tk./pair) followed by Discus (800-1,000 TK./pair) and Oscar (400-600 TK./pair) . Most of the other species were sold usually below 100 TK./pair. All aquarium fish species were imported from the international markets like India, Singapore, Thailand, etc. Importers/wholesalers and breeders marketed them to retailers, local breeders, shopkeepers, etc. and finally, the shopkeepers sold them to the aquaria owners. During this survey, it was also found that the breeders used cement cistern, glass aquaria and even earthen pots as culture tanks. They bred aquarium fish all over the year. The aquarium fish traders of Khulna district were categorized into three groups such as (A) aquarium fish and aquarium accessories sellers, (B) aquarium fish, aquarium accessories sellers along with breeding and (C) only aquarium fish breeders. From the economic analysis, it was found that the benefit cost ratio and rate of return on total cost were the highest for the group C which were 1.94 and 93.60% respectively.

Objectives:

1. To provide an initial assessment of aquarium fish trade in Khulna district of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Study area: The survey was carried out at aquarium fish shops of Khulna district, Bangladesh from May to October, 2008. Data collection: Relevant information was collected from both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources: Data were collected through questionnaire interview from 12 shops and 7 breeders in Flower market (Khan Jahan Ali Road), New Market, Shangeeta Cinema Hall area, Khalishpur and Daulatpur in Khulna district. Secondary sources: Relevant information on aquarium fish trades in Khulna and other region of Bangladesh were collected from research journals, reports and from the Internet. Data analysis: The collected data were analyzed by using enterprise-costing technique and the results were presented in the tabular form with the help of simple statistical measures like arithmetic mean, percentage and ratio. The indicators of performance are as follows: Benefit cost ratio (BCR): The ratio is calculated by dividing the quantified benefits by a measure of the cost. BCR = Total Income ÷ Total Costs Rate of return (RR) on total costs: It is obtained by dividing the profit by the total operating cost. RR on total cost (%) = (Profit ÷ Total Costs) × 100 Group In Khulna district, the aquarium fish traders are doing their business through three groups such as: Group A: Aquarium fish, aquarium equipments, feeds & other accessories sellers Group B: Aquarium fish, aquarium equipments, feeds & other accessories sellers along with breeding for fry production Group C: Only aquarium fish breeders
