Socio-economic Status of Fry Collectors After Imposing Ban on Fry Collection at Munshigonj Adjacent Area of Sunderbans in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the study area 40% fry collectors was female and 60% was male. Peak-season of fry collection was April to July. Source of fry was the surrounding Sunderbans River. They collect fry in the early morning (4 A.M to 10 A.M) and early evening. Man collect 100-150 fry per day and 20-30 fry by women in peak-season and earn Tk. 150-250 and Tk. 50-80 respectively. In spite of restriction on fry collection, the collector continues to collect fry for lack of other occupation for their livelihood and best income. It was observed that during off-peak season 60% fry collectors were involved in fishing, 12% in agriculture, 8% in labor, 6% in other occupation, 5% in wood cutting, 4% in van pulling, 2% in motorbike driving, 2% in business and 1% in honey collection. They have no skill to do any other work. Men can not catch frequently due to restriction but women and children can easily catch near the river sites.

Objectives:

1. To find out the reason why the fry collectors are still involved in fry collection after imposing restriction on fry collection in Munshigonj region, the alternative ways of livelihood that will improve the natural stock of fisheries, as well as their sustainable livelihood approach.

Methodology:

Study area - The study was conducted at Munshigonj which is situated at Shamnagar thana in the district of Satkhira in 2008. Three villages were selected randomly for survey. The villages were from North Kodamtola, Horinagar and Singhortoli. Questionnaire Survey - A questionnaire was developed to collect data on socio-economic condition, livelihood status and alternative ways of livelihood during ban season of fry collector from the Sunderbans and its adjacent rivers. The questions were specific and were free from any kind of influence. Collection of Primary data - The primary data was collected through field survey at the study area by using the developed questionnaire. Data on fry collector’s activities were collected both by physical observation and interviewing with fry collectors at the 3 villages from the 12th May to 15th November 2008. Sources of secondary data - Secondary data and information related to the study were collected from Munshigonj union parishad, different national (BBS, DoF, BARC) and international (ICLARM, FMS/DFID) organizations.
