Organic Manure and Spacing Affecting Floral and Yield Characters of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Organic manure was evaluated at the Horticulture farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, during October 2010 to April 2011 as a source of plant nutrients instead of inorganic fertilizer for tomato production. Four levels of organic manure hectare^-1 viz. 0, 10 ton cowdung, 5 ton vermicompost and 10 ton compost were treated in tomato plants maintaining three spacing of 60 cm x 60 cm, 60 cm x 45 cm and 60 cm x 30 cm arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Vermicompost and wider spacing were most effective for increasing the floral and yield characters of tomato while the highest yield of fruit ha^-1 was produced in closest spacing due to higher plant densities.

Objectives:

To overview the floral and yield components of tomato incorporate with organic manure and spacing.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the Ho rticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during October 2010 to April 2011. The location of the experimental site was at 24.09° N latitude and 90.26°E longitude with an elevation of 8.20 m from sea level. The experimental area belongs to the Modhupur Tract under AEZ No. 28. Soil of the experimental field was silty loam in texture under the subtropical climate. Four levels of organic manures ha^-1 @ 0 t, 10 t cowdung, 5 t vermicompost and 10 t compost as represented by M₀, M₁, M₂ and M₃ and, three levels of spacing viz. 60 cm × 30 cm, 60 cm × 45 cm and 60 cm × 60 cm as represented by S₁, S₂ and S₃, respectively were tested on the variety of BARI Tomato-2. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications where each plot was 2.4 m × 1.8 m in size. The plot was opened in the last week of November 2010 with a power tiller and left exposed to the sun for a week. Healthy and uniform seedlings about 30 days old were transplanted in the main field on 6^th December 2010 maintaining three levels of spacing. Organic manures- cowdung and compost containing 0.5, 0.3_,0.4% NPK and 0.7, 0.6_,0.1% NPK, respectively while vermicompost containing 1.5, 1.2_,2.6% NPK (AIS, 2012) were applied during the final land preparation. Intercultural operations were furnished for proper growth and development of the crop. Fruits were harvested at 3 days interval during 22 February to 2 April 2011. Five plants were randomly selected from each unit plot for collecting data on days to 1^st flowering, number of flower cluster plant^-1, number of flowers plant^-1, number of fruits plant^-1, length of fruit, diameter of fruit, dry matter content of fruit, weight of single fruit and fruit yield ha^-1 were collected. The mean values of all the parameters were analyzed by analysis of variance and means separation was estimated by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

Organic manures and spacing enhance the floral and yield characters of tomato. Vermicompost was more effective among the treated organic manures and significantly increased the number of flowers, fruits and yields of tomato. Maximum number of flowers and fruits were recorded in the wider spacing of 60 cm × 60 cm while higher yield ha^-1 obtained from closest spacing of 60 cm × 30 cm.
