Growth and Yield of Okra as Influenced by Different Levels of Nitrogen

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh from April to August 2012 to evaluate the different doses of nitrogen on growth and yield of okra (BARI Dherosh-1). Experiment consisted four levels of nitrogen viz. N₀: 0, N₁: 110, N₂: 120 and N₃: 130 kg N/ha using Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Maximum plant height (86.2 cm), number of leaves (43.8/plant), leaf length (28.8 cm), petiole length (23.1 cm), stem diameter (2.3 cm), internode length (14.3 cm), number of branches (4.0/plant), fruit length (16.8 cm), fruit diameter (1.9 cm), number of flower buds (29.4/plant), weight of individual fruit (11.6 g), fresh weight of leaves (298.4 g/plant), dry matter content of leaves (12.0%) and yield (7.1 kg/plot and 16.4 t/ha) was found from N2 whereas minimum fro m N₀.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum levels of nitrogen on the growth and yield of okra.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during April to August 2012. BARI Dherosh-1 was used in the experiment. Four levels o f nitrogen fertilizer viz. N₀: 0 kg N/ha (control); N₁: 110 kg N/ha; N₂: 120 kg N/ha and N₃: 130 kg N/ha were used by following Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The size of the each plot was 2.4 × 1.8 m. The distance maintained between two blocks and two plots were 1.0 and 0.5 m, respectively. Cowdung @ 10t/ha, Triple super phosphate (TSP) @ 90 kg/ha and Muriate of Potash (MP) @ 150kg/ha were used as a source of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium respectively as basal dose. Treatments were splitted and applied at 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing (DAS). The seeds were sown in rows having a depth of 2-3 cm with maintaining distance from 30 cm and 60 cm from plant to plant and row to row respectively. Five plants were randomly select ed from the middle rows of each unit plot for collecting data. Data were collected on plant height, leaves number, petiole length, stem diameter, leaf length, number of branches/plant, length of internode fresh weight/plant, dry weight/plant, days to flowering, number of flower buds/plant, number of fruits/plant, weight of individual fruits, fruit length, fruit diameter, yield/plot and yield/ha. Stem and fruit diameter was measured with digital calipers (DC-515).

Achievement/Findings:

Finally it can be stated that application of 120 kg N/ha was the best for growth and yield contributing characters of okra. Application of more than 120 kg N/ha had started to reduce the growth and yield o f okra.
