Study on Water Productivity for Rice Based Cropping System-2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur to quantify the amount of water required for rice based cropping system; and to determine the productivity and profitability of the cropping system. Among the three crop sequence, water productivity was maximum (14.99 kg/ha-mm) in T. Aman – Potato - Rice. Also maximum year round yield equivalent in terms of rice (28.81t/ha) and net return (Tk342480) was recorded in T. Aman – Potato - Rice crop sequence.

Objectives:

To quantify the amount of water required for rice based cropping system; and
To determine the productivity and profitability of the cropping system.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur during 2008-09. The treatment comprised levels of irrigation and four rice based crop sequences, laid out in Split plot design with crop sequences in main plot and irrigation in sub plot, replicated 3 times. Different rice based crop sequences/cropping system were: P₁= T. Aman–Boro–Fallow, P₂ = T.Aman–Wheat–Mungbean, P₃ = T.Aman–Potato– Rice and P₄ = T.Aman–Maize–Fallow. Irrigation treatments for all of the crops were follows: (T.Aman season): T₁ = Rainfed, T₂ = One irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 20 cm below soil surface, T₃ = One irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 15 cm below soil surface. (Boro season): T₁ = Irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 15 cm below soil surface, T₂ = Irrigation (5-7 cm) when water is 20 cm below soil surface, T₃ = Irrigation after 3 days of disappearing standing water. (Rabi/Aus season-Wheat): T₁ = One irrigation (17–21 DAS), T₂= Two irrigation (17-21 DAS+55–60 DAS), T₃ = Three irrigation (17-21 DAS+55–60 DAS+70–75 DAS). Potato: T₁= One irrigation (20–25 DAS), T₂ = Two irrigation (20-25 DAS+40–45 DAS), T₃ = Three irrigation (20-25 DAS+40–45 DAS+60–65 DAS). Mungbean: T₁= Rainfed, T₂= One irrigation (20–25 DAS), T₃= Two irrigations (20-25 DAS+45–50 DAS). Recommended doses of fertilizers were applied as per the crops. A fertilizer dose of 150:100:70:33:50 and 220:120:85:28:50 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate were used for T.Aman and Boro crop respectively. Again a fertilizer dose of 220:180:50:120, 250:150:250:120:8:10 and 50:85:35 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate, Boron (Potato) were used for Wheat, Potato and Mungbean respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum irrigation water (inclusive rainfall) was consumed by T.Aman– Potato-Rice (1921.9mm), cropping sequence followed by T.Aman–Boro–Fallow and T.Aman–Wheat-Mungbean. Water productivity was the highest (14.99 kg/ha-mm) in T.Aman–Potato–Rice sequence followed by T.Aman– Wheat–Mungbean and T.Aman–Maize-Fallow. As the water productivity is the ratio of yield to that of applied total water and because the yield was higher in case of Potato; it consequently raised the value of water productivity. Maximum net return (342480) was recorded in T. Aman–Potato–Rice crop sequence, followed by T.Aman–Wheat–Mungbean (149783), and T.Aman–Boro-Fallow (114480). Among the different levels of irrigation, significantly higher net profit was recorded with maximum frequency of irrigation.
