Potassium Fixation in Some Bangladesh Soils as Affected by Soil Depth, Particle Size and Nature of Clay Minerals

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

K-fixation was higher In the surfaces (0-6")of the soils than their corresponding; subsurfaces ( 6-12"). Clay fraction fixed the highest amount of potassium followed by silt and sand. The magnitude of K-fixation in the soils was influenced by the nature of the clay minerals present in soils. Soils containing 2 : 1 lattice minerals fixed higher Amounts of K.

Objectives:

To study the effects of the factors mentioned above in fixing added Kin some representative soils of the country.

Methodology:

The soils included in the study represented six soil series of Bangladesh at two different depths ( 0-6" and 6-12" from surface) which varied in their physical and chemical properties. The sand, silt and clay were separated by wet sieving as described. Clay minerals were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis of Oriented-Aggregate of soil clays. The fixation study was made following Volk's (1934) method as described with slight modifications. K was added at the rate of 250 Ibs/ A in the form of KCI solution.

Achievement/Findings:

All the soils excepting that of t he Khilgaon series has been found to be capable of fixing portions of the added K to various extents. In most of the cases the fixation was higher in the surfaces then their corresponding sub-surfaces. The surface soils fixed 88.10 lbs/A or 35.21 percent and the sub-surface soils fixed 71.59 1bs/A or 28.63 percent of the added K on average. Clay fixed the highest amount of potassium and the fixation was found to be positively correlated with clay fractions of the soils. On an ave rage, the clay fraction of all the soils (both surface and subsurface) fixed 102. 02 per cent K, it being 2.02 percent in excess of the added amount indicating the fixation or some native K present in them. K fixation in silt fraction ranged from 46,88 to 92.88 per cent of the added K. The sand fraction of the soils fixed on average, 57.25 per cent of the added K. The sand fraction ranked third among the three soil separates in its capacity for fixing added potassium. An extensive study on potassium with different mechanical separates of soils found that the potassium finding ability decreased consistently the particle size in creased. It is evident from the present findings that the quantity as well as quality of the colloidal material is important in deter mining the potassium fixing capacity of the soils.The present findings corroborate this statement, The variations in the intensity of K fixation in different soil separates and al so from depth to depth arc attributed to the variations in the nature and amount of different clay minerals.
