Influence of Sensory Organs in Egg Distribution of Callosobruchus Chinensis (l.) (coleoptera:bruchidae)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The neurosensory organs of Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) in the distribution of eggs on mung seeds were studied. Maxillary and labial palpi were found to play an important role to mediate the even distribution of eggs on seeds. It was also noted that antennae were not required for uniform distribution of eggs. The ablation of palpi and both palpi and antennae impair the ability of the beetle to identify seeds without eggs and caused considerable clustering of the eggs on a few seeds. Blocking on vision and treatment of tarsi with mild acid did not cause any significant change in egg laying behaviour in this bruchid.

Objectives:

To observe the mechanisms in the recognition of conspecific eggs by the female C. chinensis
To investigate the location of receptors that influence egg distribution on the seeds.

Methodology:

The insect was reared on mung beans Vigna radiata. Series of stock cultures were maintained in an incubator at 28±2? temperature and 65±5% r.h. Among the various sense organs, the role of antennae, maxillary and labial palpi, compound eyes and fore-tarsi in the recognition of conspecific eggs were investigated. The antennae and palpi of females were ablated under a dissecting/sterio microscope using a fine-foresep. Also the antennae were snipped off midway. The involvement of the contact mechanosensory cells of the tarsi was investigated by destroying the sensory receptors of tarsi by immersion in 20% HCL for 20 Sec. The involvement of visual caues in the discrimination against egg-laden seeds in favour of pristine seeds was investigated by painting the compound eyes of gravid females with white fluid using a camel's hair brush. The treatments and the combinations investigated included females with I) antennae ablated from the base, 2) Palpi ablated, 3) both antennae and palpi ablated, 4) antennae ablated from the mid-point, 5) fore-tarsi treated with 20% HCL, 6) eyes occulated with white fluid, 7) normal females. For each type of experimental insects 10 petri-dishes each containing 20 pristine seeds were taken. In each replicate for each type of experimental insect only one gravid female whose locomotory activities were not impaired was used. The number of eggs deposited and their distribution pattern (evenly/unevenly) by each type of insect/replicate were counted and recorded. A total of 4 petridishes each containing 20 egg laden and 20 pristine seeds were used for each type of experimental insects. In all the replicates of each type of experiment only one gravid female was allowed to deposit eggs for a period of three days. The number of eggs deposited to pristine and egg laden seeds were counted, recorded and compared with each other. Statistical analysis were done using X² test expecting a 50:50 distribution of eggs between the pristine and egg laden seeds.

Achievement/Findings:

These studies indicate that visual caues and contact mechano-receptors on the tarsi are involved in the distribution of eggs by C. chinensis. The present result has similarity with the findings in case of C. subinuotatus and C. maculatus respectively. From the above findings it may be concluded that the maxillary and labial palpi of C. chinensis play an important role in the distribution of their eggs.
