Rehabilitation of Degraded Sloping Land at Chittagong Hill Tract by Jute Geo-textile

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Soil erosion processes is one of the important factors of changing land use and land cover which result in declining the productivity of land. An attempt has been made to investigate the performance of geo-jute on germination & growth of cover crops while minimizing erosion hazard by reducing run-off and to increase the soil nutrient for better crop production on degraded land. For these purpose, three experimental plots had been established at the Research Area of Soil Conservation and Watershed Management Centre (SCWMC), SRDI, Bandarban. Among these are 500 GSM, 700 GSM geo-jute managed plots & remaining one is controlled. This experiment was conducted in 2014-2015 and replicated in the following years to validate the technology out side research station.

Objectives:

1. To study the performance of Geo-jute (specified types) to rehabilitate & stabilize degraded lands.

2. To compare soil loss & runoff under different types of Geo-jute.

3. To study the germination & growth of cover crop for protecting further degradation.

4. To compare nutrient mining under various types of Geo-jute.

Methodology:

Three experimental plots of 100sqm (5mx20m) were established on fully degraded, undulating & steeply sloping (Average 58% ) land in the SCWMC research area Bandarban. Two different types of geo-jute were used in this experiment. Two plots were managed by using 500 GSm. & 700 GSm. Geo-jute and another was controlled. Each plot was surrounded by masonry brick work to prevent the access of water from the outside of the plot. Grasses like Mimosa invisa, broom grass, khagra etc were planted as cover crop in exposed locus on geo-jute strands at close saucing. Contour grassed waterways were established to check runoff water flash into the landslide area that may cause further extension of the divested area in either side. Live poll such as kafula, madar, gillirecedia etc were inserted into the ground @ 1.0 m distance both in row and column throughout geo-jute strand. Measurement of soil loss and run-off was carried out by established and locally fabricated multi-slot divisors. Natural condition of the slopes was not disturbed or no any soil work was done to make artificial slope. Soil loss and run-off from each 100sqm (5m x 20m) experimental plots were measured after each shower throughout the rainy season. Daily and eventually monthly soil loss and run-off were estimated from each treatment by processing aliquot of sample every day. Every morning (if rains previous day) amount of run-off water is measured in the multi-slot and aliquot of about 2 L is sampled from each tank. Suspended sediment in the sampled aliquot is measured by simple filtering and oven drying. Corresponding rainfall is recorded from the automatic and ordinary rain gauge of SCWMC. Climatic data like rainfall, temperature, humidity, evaporation etc. were recorded daily.

Achievement/Findings:

Like any other natural fibre, jute geo-textile gets biodegraded in soil which increases soil fertility. At the primary stage, jute mat itself provides a soil cover and minimize plash erosion. As 700 GSm jute mat is denser than 500 GSm Jute mat, so it provides better soil cover than that of 500 GSm jute mat. On the other hand 500 GSm jute mat is better than 700 GSm jute mat for growing vegetation at primary stage as it is lighter than 700 GSm Jute mat. For having no soil cover at the beginning stage of rainy season, controlled plot provides more erosion and runoff which gradually decreases after rejuvenation of vegetation.
