The experiment was conducted at Laboratory of Agronomy Division, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University, Dinajpur to determine the best containers (Sealed container, polythene bag and gunny bag) and optimum moisture percentages. After initial quality assessment seed were kept in different containers to observe the deterioration pattern. Among the three containers, seeds of gunny bag absorbed more moisture from surrounding atmosphere. The initial moisture content was 7.89%, 9.94% and 11.06% of sealed container, polythene bag and gunny bag respectively. The vigourity index decreased in every case with advanced of storage period where the decreasing rate was higher in the seeds of gunny bag. The vigourity index was higher at 20 days for different containers like sealed container (19.00), polythene bag (18.39), and gunny bag (15.94) than after 60 days (17.04, 15.81 and 13.37), respectively, on newsprint paper substrate. This study opined that 7.89% (M1) initial moisture and storage in air tight sealed container (C1) is the best one for higher vigourity index in Stem Amaranth seed.

1. To determine the best containers (Sealed container, polythene bag and gunny bag) and optimum moisture percentages.

The experiment was carried out in laboratory of Agronomy Division, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur, during 2009. Experimental treatments were included in the experiment: A. Container like Sealed container (C1) Polythene bag (C2) and Gunny bag (C3) B. Initial Moisture content like 7.89? (M1), 9.94? (M2) and 11.06? (M3). Seeds were stored at room temperature and relative humidity (RH) for 2 months. The Sealed container was covered tightly and the Polythene bag and Gunny bag were tight with rope. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. During the storage period, seeds samples were taken every 20 days from the containers for determination of vigourity index and moisture level. Moisture content was determined by using high constant temperature oven method following International Rules for Seed Testing (Anonymous, 2000) in the Agronomy laboratory of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU). 3g of seeds from each 3 containers were taken. After grinding the seeds in grinding mill the weighed ground materials were poured in a small container with cover and kept in an oven maintained at a temperature of 125- 130oC for a period of 2 hours. The moisture content of seeds (wet basis) was determined by the following formula: % MC = (X2 - X3)/(X2 - X1)x 100, where, X1 = Wt. of container, X2 = Wt. of container + ground materials before drying, and X3 = Wt. of container + ground materials after drying. Vigour test was conducted using Newsprint paper as substratum (Indirect Method). Rectangular plastic boxes were used to put the paper. For every test new paper was used. Seed was placed on a uniform layer of moist paper and then covered. 100 seeds were planted in each plastic tray and replicated three times. The plastic trays with seed were incubated at room temperature and irrigated at every odd day. Germination is counts every day until germination is completed. An index of the speed of germination is then calculated by adding the quotients of the daily counts divided by the number of days of germination. Seeds were stored at ambient condition in different containers and vigour test was performed every 20 days. Reading of dry bulb and weight bulb temperature and relative humidity of inside the room and outside the room were recorded in 7.45 am, 3.00 pm, and 10.45 pm every day.

At the end of 2 months the moisture content of Stem Amaranthus seed was increase to 11.27, 11.19, and 12.13 percent. The increasing rate was higher in seeds of gunny bag. Significant moisture increase was observed at 40 and 60 days after storage. As seed is highly hygroscopic living material; it absorbs moisture from air if it is stored in an environment where relative humidity is higher than seed moisture content the relative humidity was near 70% or above.
