Evaluation of Technical Vocation Education and Training Program for Basic Trade Course Under the Circumstance of Food Processing & Preservation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This report is a snapshot survey of industry needs with just one multinational or large scale, one national medium scale and one national small scale food industry response national wide. This survey has been done on 10 October to 10 December 2009 from different industries, students and institutions that are given bellow. This report also shows that student satisfaction with the learning program, Evaluation of the institutions delivering the program of study and the syllabus design that is delivered from the institution. From the analysis of the issues it was found that most of the enterprise perceives that the graduates coming out of the vocational systems are not meeting their needs. They feel that the system is counting to produce graduates for old and marginal trades. From the institution it was found that Learning and teaching methods are old fashioned and inadequate for knowledge based skills. TVET teachers and trainers tend to have an academic background and lack relevant practical work experience. From the survey of the graduates, the most telling of the system is that curricula are not sufficiently related to labor market needs. The emphasis remains on theoretical and out-dated teaching methods rather than on practical teaching. This summary presents a synopsis of the different sections and highlights key challenges faced by the vocational education and training (VET) system as well as the potential options to address some of these constraints.

Objectives:

1. The objective of the study is to evaluated BTEB accredited programs of learning relevant to the four sectors of Leather and leather Goods, Transport, Agro food processing and Information technology from the perspective of the employer, the graduates and from a pedagogical point of view.

Methodology:

This study is based on data from both primary and secondary sources. Secondary sources were gathered mostly from available relevant literature, documents, and study report of TVET have also been collected, and thoroughly studied and reviewed. The four different types of entrepreneurs that were selected by ILO (International Labor Organization) were planned to be interviewed by different location, but in fact more entrepreneurs were interviewed because there were not more TVET graduate employed as our exception. For assessment and evaluation at least four graduates of the Basic Trade Course Food Processing & Preservation were assessed through the enterprises visited and interviewed. Again a questionnaire was completed based on the interview. At least two of the institution where the graduates have graduated were interviewed and assessed accordingly to the given criteria. Syllabus Design of the Basic Trade Course Food Processing & Preservation was assessed by a person with curriculum development experience and knowledge of the study area. A questionnaire form was completed from there.
