Control of Mustard Aphid (lipaphis Erysimi) Using Different Botanical Insecticides

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out in the field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e- Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh, during November 2012 to March 2013 to control the mustard aphid (Lipaphis er ysimi) using botanicals pesticides. The experiment was laid out with eight treatments viz. T₁: Neem seed karnel extract, T₂: Tobacco leaf dusts, T₃: Neem oil, T₄: Sumi Alpha, T₅: Neem seed karnel extract + Sumi Alpha, T₆: Tobacco leaf dusts + Sumi Alpha, T₇: Neem oil + Sumi Alpha and T₈: control; with three replications. The treatments were treated from 15 days after seedling transplanted with 7 days intervals. Neem oil + Sumi Alpha at 7 days interval were more effective among the management practices to control mustard aphid. Further more, Neem oil + Sumi Alpha have positive effect on growth and yield of mustard.

Objectives:

1. The present research work has been undertaken in order to find out the most suitable botanicals insecticides to control mustard aphid.

Methodology:

A field study was conducted in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka, November 2012 to March 2013, to evaluate the influence of different botanicals insecticides to control aphid infestation on mustard field. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Eight treatments were used viz. T₁: Neem seed kernel extract 5%; T₂: Tobacco leaf dusts @ 20 g/L of water; T₃: Neem oil @ 0.3%; T₄: Sumi Alpha 5EC @ 1ml/L of water; T₅: Neem seed kernel extract 5% + Sumi Alpha 5EC @ 1ml/L of water; T₆: Tobacco leaf dusts @ 20 g/L of water + Sumi Alpha 5EC @ 1ml/L of water; T₇: Neem oil @ 0.3% + Sumi Alpha 5EC @ 1ml/L of water and T₈: control. Botanicals insecticides were sprayed from early vegetative stage to fruiting at 7 days interval. BARI SARISA-15 was used as a test crop for this experiment. The experiment consists of total 24 plots of size 3.0 m × 2.0 m. All the 8 treatments of the experiment were assigned at random into 8 plots of each block/replication. During the experiment intercultural operation was accomplished through visual observation. Percentage of plant infestation and infestation reduction were calculated. Plant height, number of siliquae per plant, length of siliqua, weight of 1000 seeds and seed yield per hectare were recorded. Statistical analyses were done with MSTAT-C software program. Mean comparisons was conducted and analysis of variance for each of variety was represented by F-test. Differences between varieties were evaluated by Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study revealed the bio-efficiency activity of different plant botanicals insecticides against mustard aphid. Neem oil and Sumi Alpha have been proved the best results in growth and yield of mustard, as well as best for controlling mustard aphid.
