Allelopathic Effect of Different Plant Residues on Growth and Yield of Three Aman Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, during July 2010 to December, 2010. Different plant residues viz. Lantena camera, goose weed, ban sharisha and araich were used in this experiment to find out the allelopathic effect on growth and yield of three aman rice varieties. Aman rice varieties were viz. BRRI dhan 46, Guti Swarna and Ranzit. Results showed significantly higher in grain yield of ranzit with ariach (6.5 t ha^-1). Araiach and Razit also exhibited the higher number of tillers hill^-1 (13.6), filled grains panicle^-1 (256.0) and 1000-grain weight (23.8 g). As a result, BARI- 46 and Ranzit considered as the most important variety and the most effective plant residue was ariach for growth and yield of aman rice.

Objectives:

1. The present piece of research find out the allelopathic effect of some plant residues on growth and yield of three aman rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the Agronomy Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of July to December, 2010, to find out the growth and yield of three aman rice. Hence, experiment was laid out in split plot design in with three replications. The first factor involved three rice varieties; V₁, BRRI dhan46; V₂, Guti Swarna; V₃, Ranzit. The second factor was allelopathic materials; M_o, Control; M₁, Lantena camera; M₂, Goose weed; M₃, Ban sharisha; M₄, Araich. It was combination with 15 treatments of both factors. The area was divided into three main plots and rice varieties were placed in the main plots. Each main plot was divided into 5 subplots which received allelopathic materials. The size of subplots was 3m × 3m =9 m². The distance maintained between two subplots was 100 cm and between blocks was 150 cm. Allelopathic materials were collected from nearby fields and roadside and were dried and cut into small pieces for easy incorporation in the main field. Different allelopathic materials were applied with each plot at rate 0.3 kgm^-2. Healthy seeds of BRRI dhan46 were collected from BRRI, Joydebpur, Gazipur as well as Guti Swarna and Ranzit seeds were collected from local market of Sirajganj. Seeds were immersed in water in a bucket for 24 hrs for sprouting. Seed beds were prepared before sprouting of seed. Sprouted seeds were sown in bed as uniformly for healthy seedling. Besides, main plots were prepared for transplanting of seedling. Furthermore, plot was ploughed with before applying cowdung at the rate of 10 t ha^-1 and chemical fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. Whatever, the intercultural operations were accomplished by visual observation at 15 days interval. Ten hills per plot was randomly selected from very beginning for collecting plant height, yield contributing and other relevant data like number of effective and ineffective tillers per hill, length of panicle, number of filled and unfilled grains per panicle, grain weight and straw weight. The grain yield and straw yield were recorded by harvesting the inner six lines from each plot to avoid boarder effects. The harvested plants were threshed & dried to a constant moisture level. Statistical analyses were done by using the IRRISTAT computer package developed by IRRI and the mean differences among the treatments were compared by least significant difference test at 5 % level of significance following Gomez and Gomez.
