An experiment was carried out to determine the toxicity of different solvent extracts of Chhoto kamine (Murraya koenigii) alone and combined with Lignin and Sulphoneted Lignin separately against Sitophilus oryzae adults. Mortality was noted after 24, 48 and 72 hours of the treatment. The result indicates that Methanol extract of M. koenigii alone was the most toxicant where as other extracts or combined mixture showed moderate effect against the Sitophilus oryzae adults. The LD50 values of Methanol extract of M. koenigii alone were 950.36μg/cm2,254.12 μg/cm2 and 129.03μg/cm2 at 24, 48 and 72 hours interval respectively. The order of the efficacy at 48 hours were Methanol > Petroleum ether + Sulphonated lignin > Pet.ether + Lignin > Petroleum ether alone and at 72 hours Petroleum ether alone > Methanol > Pet. ether + sulphoneted Lignin > Pet. ether + lignin> Petroleum ether alone. Thus use of plants in controlling insect infestation would offer desirable solutions, especially in developing tropical countries, where plants are found in abundance everywhere throughout the year.

1. The present investigation deals to test the efficacy of bagsse based Lignin in combination with sub lethal doses of botanicals (Murraya koenigii) against maize and rice pest (Sitophilus oryzae).

This study was conducted in the BCSIR Laboratories, Rajshahi, Bangladesh during the month of June to September 2013. Stock cultures of the test insects were maintained in separate 1000 ml beakers at 300± 10C in an incubator. The leaves of Chhoto kamine (Murraya koenigii) were procured from the BCSIR Labratories area of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The leaves were dried in a well-ventilated room under shade from 3 to 7 days depending on weather conditions and finally dried in an incubator at 400C for 12 hours. Dried plants parts were then powdered in a hand grinder and extraction was carried out serially with petroleum ether, acetone and methanol in a soxhlet apparatus for separating different compounds. After extraction, extracted liquid were dried in a rotary evaporator and then collected in a small reagent bottle, preserved at 40C in a refrigerator. Methanol and Petroleum ether extracts were used in this experiment. Sugarcane bagasse was collected from Rajshahi sugar mills adjacent to BCSIR Laboratories, Rajshahi. Bagasses were air dried; one kg bagasse was taken, heating with 2% potasium hydroxyid solution and neutralized with Hydrochloric acid (HCl). The powder form Lignin found was soluble in water. The procedure of preparation of Sulfonated Lignin is same, only the use of sulphanilic acid instead of hydrochloric acid. For testing beetle mortality, five doses were used including control (water). Ten to fifteen day old adults of Sitophilus oryzae were used at 157.19, 314.38, 471.57 and 628.76μg/cm2. The doses were prepared by mixing the requisite quantities of the product with 1(one) ml water. After mixing properly the liquid was dropped in a petridish (9.5 cm diameter) .After drying by fanning and finally in an oven at 400C, 20 adults were released in each petridish. For each dose three replications were taken. The doses were calculated by measuring the weight of prepared product into μg/cm2.Mortality was assessed after 24, 48 and 72 h of the treatment. The mortality was corrected by using Abbotts formula and LD50 values were determined by probit analysis . The experiments were performed in the laboratory at ambient temperature (300C± 0.50C.
