The study was carried out to reveal the culture and management practice of freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) in different villages of Abhaynagaer upazila, Jessore, from September 2012 to January 2013. The informations were collected through interviewing 50 prawn fish farmer with a semi-open questionnaire, which include the physical condition of the prawn ghers, prestocking management, stocking management, post-stocking management, integrated rice-prawn farming, social condition of prawn farmers, production and cost benefit analysis of polyculture and monoculture system. In study area, most of the prawn farmer practice pond preparation procedure; use Cow dung, Urea, and TSP as fertilizers and snail meat, fish meal, bhusi, rice bran as supplementary feed. About 60% farmers practice polyculture while 35% practice crop-rotation prawn farming and only 5% monoculture of prawn. On an average total income from polyculture and monoculture are 395300 Tk./ha/year and 288000 Tk./ha/year while the expenditure is 241090 Tk./ha/year and 212290 Tk./ha/year. The net benefit was 154210 Tk./ha/year for polyculture and 75710 Tk./ha/year for monoculture and net income rate was 63.97 % and 35.67% consecutively. In study area, fish farmers do not have sufficient scientific knowledge in prawn farming management. So the farmers need to be trained in aquaculture management through aquaculture training programs.

1. The major objectives of the study were to know the present status of prawn culture system in Abhaynagar, Jessore. And provide possible suggestion and information for the improvement of prawn culture in the region.

Study area - The study was conducted from September 2012 to December 2012 at Abhaynagar upazila under the Jessore district of Bangladesh. About 50 ghers were randomly selected from 8 Union and only one Nowapara municipal. More specifically, the village namely Gazipur, Sadarpara, Akterpur, Gramtala, Kadirpara, Payra, Vulapata, Sundali, praimbag, Siddipasha were selected. Data collection - At a weekly interval primary data were collected directly from farmers with a well designed questionnaire. Information about prawn culture systems, socio-economic condition, educational background of the fish farmers and physical condition of ponds such as size of the pond, water depth and dike etc were collected. Data related to pond preparation such as drying, cleaning, liming and fertilization were collected from interviewing the farmer directly. Management data including stocking density of fry, species composition, size of fry, feeding, fertilization, disease control etc were collected. Production and cost of prawn farming were recorded. Different FGDs were conducted to identify the problems and to collect farmer’s recommendation regarding the problems identified. Data processing, presentation and Statistical analyses - All the collected data were analyzed with Statistical software SPSS and MS Excel 2007. Food conversion rate was calculated with the equation FCR = Weight of food fed/ Live weight of gain. The cost benefit ratio (CBR) analysis was carried out using the following formula - (CBR) = Total cost / Total benefit (Total benefit = Total income - Total cost)

Culture of giant fresh water prawn plays an important role in the socio – economic condition of the people of the Abhaynagar Upazila. People of the Abhaynagar upazila solely engaged in prawn farming due to its higher market value. Farmers mainly practice poly culture of giant fresh water prawn with carp species. Farmers got more benefit from poly culture than mono culture system. In spite of several problems, the practice of prawn farming has offered an opportunity to increase incomes of farmers and associated groups. Large parts of our GDP come from agriculture. Fisheries have a great contribution in our total GDP. It has been estimated that about 60% of animal protein comes from fish. So by introducing poly culture of prawn farming we can fulfill the whole needs for the animal protein supply as fish farming offer excellent opportunities to fight against the existing problem of animal protein malnutrition. Government help is very important in the development of prawn sector of Abhaynagar upazila. Farmers need enough credit facilities for good aquaculture practice training. Farmers need proper training for understanding the problems of prawn culture. Although numerous constraints can be recognized, the prospects of prawn are positive.
