Patch Weeding on Success of Plantation in Chittagong University

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experimental plantation was established on 880m2 area of patch weeded hill in Chittagong University during July 2009. Total 560 seedlings of Shorea robusta, Dipterocarpus turbinatus and Acacia auriculiformis were planted using 1.2m ×1.2m spacing showed 92.86% average survivability measured on June 2010. Expenditure estimated 1 year after Plantation for collecting planting materials, planting with concurrent patch weeding and subsequent weeding and vacancy filling requiring 67500 TK./ha in the study area. Land coverage by weeds after1.5 years of plantation establishment increased from 50% to 95% and none of the seedling and sapling was suppressed from weeds. Height growth of planted species ranged between 0.4m to 6m at 18 month age as on January 2011, from which 52.14% lied in 0.4 – 2m height class followed by 28.57% lied in > 2 – 4m height class and 19.29% lied in 4 – 6m height class.

Objectives:

1. To reduce competition for light, space, moisture and nutrient two weeding were carried out in whole study area.

Methodology:

Chittagong University (CU) lies between about 22°27'30" and 22°29'0" North latitudes and 91°46'30" and 91°47'45" East longitudes and covering about 509.24 ha land. About 60 % land area of the CU Campus is covered by steep and very steep hill. The university area enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by hot, humid and cool, dry winter. The monsoon (rainy) season from May-October receiving about 90 % of the total rainfall of the year is warm and humid. The dry season (or winter) from November to the lowest temperatures and humidifies of the year. The pre-monsoon (or hot) season from March to April, receives only about 7 % of the total rainfall from periodic thundershowers. It is hot and records the highest temperatures and the highest rates of evaporation. The experimental area (88m × 10m) was selected purposively covered with grass, herb, shrub and weeds of 2-15 cm in height subjected to frequent encroachment and grazing was brought under subsequent mixed plantation applying patch weeding at 27 – 31 July 2009 situated to the north-eastern border between Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University (IFESCU) campus and privately owned agricultural field. No weeding and burning was done at the time of planting. One year old 177 Shorea robusta (Sal) and 183 Dipterocarpus turbinatus (Telya garjan) seedlings were planted at 1.2m × 1.2m spacing in this experimental plantation. For sure success of the plantation another 200 Acacia auriculiformis (Acacia) seedlings were planted on the boarder of the plantation area. Again on 4th June 2010 vacancy filling was done with 40 seedlings of Swintonia floribunda (Civit), Podocarpus nerifola (Banshpata) and Hopea ordorata (Telsur) which were collected from IFESCU nursery. Data on height for measuring height class for the existing species were taken on January 17, 2011.

Achievement/Findings:

Since this plantation as well as most forestry activities are on upland watershed of the country various benefits are possible to derive upon success of patch weeding technique in the plantations. This technique would help in maintaining natural feature of forest and with the presence of such forest land grabbers would not be inspired physiologically to encroach such forest land, This would create good habitat for wildlife and conserve soil from erosion, Above all, this would ameliorate or create congenial environment with respect to atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere.
