The commercial timber harvesting from natural forest is banded in Bangladesh, the private sector sawmills usually use logs for sawing from private customers. This work presents the analysis of time consumption pattern of private sector sawmills in Bogra using stop-watch technique. With the data obtained multiple linear regression models were established. In manual log unloading, effective time showed positive correlation with both the log volume and crew number. For manual transportation of logs from unloading area to storage, from log storage to head rig and from saw to loading area, effective time had positive correlation with log volume, distance and crew number. In case of pit sawing (logs cut along the length), effective time had positive correlation with log length. In case of band sawing, effective time had positive correlation with log girth and negative correlation with log length. Among the four species studied in sawmilling operation, it was observed that sawing rate of Jam (Syzygium spp.) was the lowest (7.02 cft/hour) and sawing rate of Shimul (Bombax ceiba) was the highest (11.94 cft/hour). For all the four species correlation between log volume and sawing time was found positive. Delay time was found maximum (26.91%) in manual log transportation from unloading area to storage and minimum (20.42%) in band sawing operation.

To analyse the time consumption pattern of private sector sawmills in Bogra using stop-watch technique.

Geographical location of the study area - Bogra district with an area of 2919.9 sq km, bounded by Joypurhat and Gaibanda districts on the north, the Chalan beel, Natore and Sirajganj districts on the south, Jamuna river and Jamalpur district on the east, Part of Chalan Beel, naogaon and Natore districts on the west. It is situated within 24°33' and 25°05' north latitude and 88°56' to 89°45' east longitude. Location of the sawmills - The data were collected directly from 12 private sector sawmills out of 61 sawmills in Bogra town of Bogra district following simple random sampling. Surveyed sawmills were located at Chalopara, Nishindara, Sabgram, Tinmatha, Charmatha and Chandai of Bogra town. Data collection - General information on sawmilling operation was collected directly from the field in accordance with questionnaire. Time data on different work segments viz. unloading, log transportation, sawing, loading were measured using two stop-watches. Volumes of logs were assessed by taking help of the workers working in the mills for different work elements of sawmilling operation except sawing. In band sawing operation initial volume of logs were measured directly. Four readily available species from different species were selected for collecting required information, viz., Shimul : Bombax ceiba, Jam : Syzygium spp., Raintree : Albizia saman, and Kanthal : Artocarpas heterophyllus. The measurement of volume of log was based on the following formula V = π × r2 × l, Where, V = Volume of the log (cft), π = 3.14, r = Radius of the log at middle point, l = Length of the log. Data analysis - Raw data were used to determine average and other parameters with the help of MS Excel. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS 13.0) software was used for regression analysis.

Time study is very important tool to improve the productivity of any production system where a lot of capital is invested. In case of sawmilling it is also unavoidable. From the survey it was found that in private sector sawmilling time factor was the most important criterion for their productivity. The main aim of sawmilling is productivity and this may be achieved by obtaining the highest productive performance from sawmill, enabling each machine and operator most efficient and obtaining the highest value from the log at economic production rate.
