Seventy nine fish seed farms (FSF) were purposively selected from the Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh District, Bangladesh, to study the communication facilities, integrated farming facilities, sizes, disease infestation, educational and training status, technical know-how and experience of the owners of different fish seed farms on the fish seed production. Sources of funding, product price, employee status, cost and returns of fish seed production, and constraints faced by FSF were also investigated. The owners of FSF with only hatchery (FSFH) were financially solvent, well-educated and knowledgeable than the owners of FSF with only nursery ponds (FSFN). Regarding fish seed business, owners of the FSFN had more experience than the owners of FSFH. Most of the hatchery owners were satisfied with the existing communication facilities; a few of them had integrated farming amenities. It was found that hatchery and nursery owners received uppermost prices of spawn and fry, and fingerlings, respectively at the start of the season and the prices gradually goes down at the end of the season. Lack of technical knowhow was one of the major constraints as claimed by the owners. Although fish seed business was a profitable one, the constraints identified in this study could be solved by providing effective participatory training for the farm owners and employees, ensuring proper marketing facilities, providing loan facilities to poor owners, and improving law and order situations of the country.

1. This study was aimed to get up-to-date overview of the current characteristics and management practices of the fish seed production farms, socio-economic aspects and technical capabilities of the owners and implications of the good quality supply system in Bangladesh.

This study was conducted at Trishal Upazila in Mymensingh District of north-central Bangladesh located 120 km north of the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka. The district is divided into 12 sub-districts (Upazila) among which three, Muktagacha, Trishal and Bhaluka, have large numbers of hatcheries and fish seed production farms. Trishal Upazila was selected for this study in view of the fact that there has been phenomenal growth in the number of fish seed farms and fish hatcheries in private sector. Most of the government and private fish seed farms (FSF) having only hatchery or both hatchery and nursery facilities are located near the urban areas of the concerned district. The FSF having only nursery facilities are located in both urban and rural areas. Purposive sampling technique was used to collect data and information during the period of February to April, 2012. Seventy nine FSF under three categories were selected from Mymensingh district. Sixteen FSF with only hatchery (FSFH), 40 FSF with only nursery ponds (FSFN) and 23 FSF with both hatchery and nursery ponds (FSFHN) were selected and concerned farm owners or managers were interviewed by a pre-tested structured questionnaire. The specific areas covered in the questionnaire were socioeconomic characteristics of the owners and employee, physical facilities that were available in the farm, integrated farming facilities, educational level, training status, occupational experience, cost and returns of the farms total production cost, income from sale of spawn, fry and fingerlings and other relevant aspect of fish seed production of fish farms. The collected data were summarized carefully before actual tabulation. The processed data were transferred to a master sheet from which classified tables were prepared revealing the findings of the study. Preliminary data sheets were compared with computer spread sheets to ensure the accuracy of the data. After data entry, “Microsoft Excel” and “SPSS” (Statistical Package for Social Science), (Chicago, IL, USA) computer package was used to perform descriptive statistical analysis of data. A linear regression model was used to analyze the relationship between cost and return of the fish seed farms.

To meet the soaring demand of quality fish seed, there is a need for increased fish seed production by public and private hatcheries in Bangladesh. A number of significant constraints to fish seed farming were identified, particularly lack of technical knowledge, high feed cost, insufficient water supply in dry season, diseases, lack of credit, flood and leasing of pond. Apart from these, FSF owners have been supplying quality fish seeds to support remarkable aquaculture production in Bangladesh. To ensure an increasing demand in quality fish seed production and also to increase its profitability, emphasis should be given on institutional and organizational support, training facilities, marketing facilities and provision of low-interest credit to the fish seed farm owners. Training and technical support would help to increase the knowledge of FSF owners, which finally improve the profitability and reduce risks of the farm operation. Results of this study may provide some empirical evidence to the researchers and policy makers in formulation plans related to fisheries development of the country.
