Socio-economic Status of Tobacco Farmers in Some Selected Areas of Rangpur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted to assess the socio-economic status of tobacco farmers of the Gongachora, Pirgachha and Taraganj thana of Rangpur district, from May to July, 2010. Data were collected through the use of well-structured questionnaire from the selected areas. Most of family members of tobacco farmers were belonged to the age groups of less than 15 years (38%). About 15.8% had no education while 30.4%, 45.9%, and 7.9% had primary, secondary, higher education level respectively. About 90% of tobacco farmers were involved in tobacco farming where about 10% were involved in business as their major occupation. The annual income of the small farmers were 70729, medium farmers were 97481and large farmers were 188302 Tk. About 80% the of tobacco farmers of study area received health service from village doctors and remaining 17% from health complex and 3% from private MBBS doctors. About 84% of the tobacco farmers informed their socioeconomic conditions were improved through tobacco production.

Objectives:

1. The specific objective of the study is to examine the socio-economic status of tobacco farmers in the study areas.

Methodology:

Rangpur district was selected purposively as the study area because this district is one of the leading tobaccos producing area of Bangladesh. Selection of the study area for a farm management study is an important step and largely depends upon the objectives set for the study. Keeping in mind the main objectives of the present study, Gongachora, Pirgachha and Taraganj thana of Rangpur district were purposively selected for the collection of primary data by a structural questionnaire during the period of May to July, 2010. The questions were arranged in logical sequences. Sixty farmers were selected out of 2465 by using simple random sampling technique in which 26 were small, 23 were medium and 11 were large. Two techniques of analysis were used for data processing, eg., tabular and statistical, and then presented in textual, tabular and graphical forms to understand the present status of livelihood of tobacco farmers of the studied area.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the different observations during the present study, Gongachora, Pirgachha and Taraganj Thana of Rangpur district was found to be potential area for tobacco production. Most of family members of tobacco farmers were belonged to the age groups of less than 15 years. In the study area most of the sample farmers had secondary level of education. About 90% of tobacco farmers were involved in tobacco farming where about 10% were involved in business as their major occupation. The annual income of large farmers was higher than others, About 80% the of tobacco farmers of study area received health service from village doctors and remaining 17% from health complex and 3% from private MBBS doctors. About 84% of the tobacco farmers informed their socio-economic conditions were improved through tobacco production. It may be concluded that, tobacco production is a profitable business and tobacco farmers improved their living status day by day in the study area. The tobacco farmers should be given amenities for education and trainings so that they can be well aware of their problems and prime rights.
