Vase Life Quality Improvement of White Snowball Using Vase Life Extending Solutions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Department of Horticulture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, during December 2012 to January 2013 following Completely Randomized Design with three replications to extend the vase life of cut white snowball chrysanthemum. Five treatments were exerted in experiment, i.e., tap water (Control, C₀); distilled water (C₁); 100-ppm sucrose solution (C₂); 100-ppm Lemon juice solution (C₃) and 100-ppm Sucrose + Lemon juice solution (C₄). 100-ppm of sucrose + lemon juice solution (C₄) provided fresh weight loss (7.0 g), days taken for first petal fall (5.0 days), days taken for petal discoloration (8.7 days) and longevity (13.0 days) whereas maximum flower head diameter (92.2 mm) was found in 100-ppm lemon juice solution (C₃) which was statistically similar with C₄ (90.8 mm).

Objectives:

1. White snowball chrysanthemum was used to find out easily available vase life extending solution for house hold user in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Department of Horticulture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, Bangladesh during December 2012 to January 2013. Cut chrysanthemum flowers were collected from Horticultural farm of the University. Approximately uniform cut white snowball chrysanthemum flowers were used for the study. Stems were trimmed in equal length and leaves of the stem were removed just before placing for the experiment. Slanting cut of the stem was made to provide more solution accumulated area. Five treatments were exerted in experiment considering availability and easily usable in flower vase of one’s house. Treatments were tap water (Control, C₀); distilled water (C₁); 100-ppm sucrose solution (C₂); 100-ppm Lemon juice solution (C₃) and 100-ppm Sucrose + lemon juice solution (C₄). 100-ppm solution of sucrose and lemon juice was prepared by admixing 100mg of sucrose and lemon juice (extracted from lemon) in one litre water respectively, and then 200ml was received. 100-ppm of sucrose + lemon juice solution was prepared by admixing 50mg sucrose and 50ml of lemon juice (extracted from lemon) in one litre water, and then 200ml solution was received. Flowers were kept in room temperature during the period of experiment and the vase solutions were not changed. Flowers on vase solutions were examined as and when necessary and continued up to the end of vase life of flower. Data were collected on flower head diameter, days to first petal fall, days to petal discoloration: fresh weight loss and flower longevity. Collected data were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C program. Mean was calculated and analysis of variance for each of treatment was represented by F-test. Differences between treatments were evaluated by Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.

It can be stated that household user can use sucrose with lemon juice (100-ppm) as vase life extending solution without changing the solution to keep white snowball chrysanthemum on their flower vase.
