Effect of Nitrogen Levels on Yield Parameters of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Agronomy Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during November 2007 to March 2008 to evaluate the effect of variety and nitrogen levels on growth, and yield of wheat. The treatment consists of four nitrogen levels (0, 120, 160 & 200 kg ha^-1) and three wheat cultivars (Shourav, Shatabdi and Protiva). The experiment was laid out in a RCBD (factorial) design with three replications. Each plot received fertilizers @ 20 kg P, 60 kg K, 10 kg S and 1.5 kg Zn ha^-1 through TSP, MOP, gypsum and ZnO, respectively. Results revealed that the yield and yield contributing characters of wheat showed positive response with an increase in nitrogen levels up to 160 kg N ha^-1. The highest grain yield (3.32 t ha^-1) was obtained from 160 kg N ha-1, whereas the lowest (1.51t ha^-1) was recorded from 0 kg N ha^-1. Application of 200 kg N ha^-1 decreased grain yield. The variety Shatabdi produced the highest grain yield (3.63 t ha^-1) and Protiva produced the lowest grain yield (3.12 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

1. The present investigation was undertaken to examine the effect of nitrogen at different levels on three wheat cultivars Sourav, Shatabdi and Protiva.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agronomy Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka during November 2007 to March 2008. It belongs to the AEZ 28, Madhupur Tract. Certified seeds were collected from the Wheat Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur. Four Nitrogen levels (N₀= 0 kg N ha^-1 (control), N₁=120 kg N ha^-1, N₂=160 kg N ha^-1 and N₃=200 kg N ha^-1) and three Varieties (V₁= Shourav, V₂= Shatabdi, V₃= Protiva) were taken as treatments.The experiment was laid out in a RCBD (factorial) with three replications. Seeds were sown in line on 29 November, 2008 and the seed rate being 125 kg ha^-1.

Achievement/Findings:

The plant height was influenced by both nitrogen and variety. The tallest plant was found where application of 160 kg N ha^-1. Nitrogen at the rate of 120 kg and 200 kg ha^-1 produced statistically the similar plant height. In wheat varieties the plant height ranked Shatabdi > Soubav > Protiva. Combine effect of Shatabdi and 160 kg N ha^-1 performed better than others. In respect of grain yield, nitrogen had significant variation at different levels. The highest grain yield (3.32 t ha^-1) was obtained from 160 kg N ha^-1. Regarding the wheat variety, grain yield variation was also significant. Interaction effect showed that 160 kg N in combination with Shatabdi produced the highest yield (3.48 t ha^-1) and lowest 0 kg N and shatabdi.
