Phosphorus Levels on Growth and Flowering of Tuberose (polianthes Tuberosa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticultural farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from April, 2009 to March, 2010 to investigate the effect phosphorus on growth, flowering and bulb yield of tuberose. The experiment consisted of Four levels of phosphorus i.e. P₀: 0, P₁: 135, P₂: 145 and P₃: 155 kg P₂O₅/ha respectively and was laid out with Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Highest flower (19.3 t/ha) and bulb (24.7 t/ha) yield was recorded from P₃ and the lowest flower (9.6 t/ha) and bulb (14.5 t/ha) yield was recorded from P₀.

Objectives:

To determine the effects of phosphorus on growth, bulb and flower production of tuberose.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from April, 2009 to March, 2010. The soil of the experimental area was non-calcarious dark grey and belongs to the Madhupur Tract under AEZ 28. The selected plot was medium high land and soil series was Tejgoan with a pH of 5.6. The experiment consisted with different levels of Phosphorus (P₀, 0 kg P₂O₅/ha; P₁,135 kg P₂O₅/ha; P₂ = 145 kg P₂O₅/ha and P₃ = 155 kg P₂O₅/ha with three replication and the experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Black Design. The bulbs of tuberose were collected from Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207. Urea, Triple Super Phosphate and Muriate of Potash were used as source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium respectively. Full dose of cow dung (20 t/ha), and TSP were incorporated during final land preparation. The total dose of nitrogen (200 kg N/ha) and potash (190 kg K₂O/ha) were applied in three equal installments. The first installment was applied at 30 days after planting. The second and third installments were applied at 65 and 100 days respectively after planting. Uniform bulbs were planted in each unit plot with 25 cm x 25 cm spacing at a depth of 6 cm on April 20, 2009. The spikes of tuberose were harvested when the first floret in the rachis opened. Harvesting was done during 22 August to 14 January, 2010 and bulb and bulblet were harvested on 16 March, 2010.

Achievement/Findings:
