An experiment was conducted at the Jute Research Regional Station, Kishoreganj of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, during the period from 2010-2011 to 2011-2012. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete design with four replications to find out the effects of preceding rabi crops, viz. wheat, potato, lentil and fallow on productivity of succeeding jute crops. The plant characters like plant height and base diameter of capsularis and olitorius jute did not differ significantly as affected by proceeding rabi crops. Results also relived that the fiber and stick yield both the jute were significantly affected. The higher fibre yield of capsularis jute (3.90 tha-1 and 3.77 tha-1) and olitorius jute (3.51 tha-1 and 2.93 tha-1) were recorded when it was grown after potato and lower, when grown after wheat and fallow in both the years. There is no sharp variation in harvest index and no consistent between two years.

To study effect of preceding rabi crops on yield and yield attributes of jute.

The experiment was conducted at the Jute Research Regional Station, Kishoreganj of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, during the period from 2010-2011 to 2011-2012. The soil of experimental plot was silt loam in texture, slightly acidic (pH 6.17), low in organic carbon (0.72%), total nitrogen (0.72%) and exchangeable potassium (0.074 meq./100), had optimal level of phosphorus (32.0 ppm) and available sulphur near about critical level (14.0 ppm). In rabi season, the crops, viz. wheat, potato, lentil and fallow were grown in randomized complete design with four replications following recommended cultivation technique for respective crops. After harvest of rabi crops, each plot divided into two equal halves for growing capsularis and olitorius jute. The plot size for jute crop was 4m X 5m. The land was prepared by repeated ploughing followed by laddering. Weed and residues of previous crop were cleaned properly. Drainage channel was made around the plot to remove the excess rainwater. The varieties of capsularis jute CVL-1 and olitorius jute O-9897 were used for this study. The fertilizer was applied at the rate of 45.0-5.0-22.5-8.0 kg ha-1 and 90.0-10.0-45.0-8.0 kg ha-1 N-P-K-S for CVL-1 and O-9897, respectively. For both the species 50% nitrogen and full amount of other chemical fertilizer were applied as basal during land preparation and the rest amount of nitrogen fertilizer were applied as top dress in two equal splits at 30 and 45 days after sowing. The rabi crops sown in the same day 12.12.2010 and 29.11.2011. The rabi crops was harvest at maturity stage. The jute crops sown in 18.4.2011 and 15.4.2012.Seeds of jute crop were sown in rows. Row to row distance was maintained 30cm. Seeds were sown continuously in rows at a rate 8 kg ha-1 for CVL-1 and 6 kg ha-1 O-9897 as per recommendation. Jute crops were harvested at 120 days after sowing. At harvest 1 m2 area of three samples was harvested out of 20m2 plot for recording plant population. The plant height and base diameter were recorded from entire plot. The bundles of jute plants were steeped in fresh water with help of water hyacinth and other aquatic weeds. The jute fibre was stripped from stick manually after completion of proper retting. The fibre was washed in clean water. The fibre was dried on bamboo bar in the sun for 2-3 days until it complete drying.

From the result it can concluded that the productivity of jute significantly increases when jute crops cultivated after potato and lentil compared to that grown after wheat and fallow.
