The Aetiology and Complication of Arsenicosis

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper intends to explore of arsenic poisoning in Bangladesh and to find out the socio-economical status linked to arsenic toxicity among the rural peoples and associated with other disorders. Currently, many scientists were investigated the dangers of arsenic poisoning and the ways to get rid of them. In Bangladesh a large number of people drink tube-well water, whereas arsenic free tube-wells are still less than required. Villagers are alarming arsenic poisoning then rural peoples. This is a pilot survey with structural questionnaires. The survey was conducted to five villages at Kolaroa thana in Satkhira district and Damurhuda thana in Chuadanga district. Fifty patients were selected to get some information about toxicity of arsenicosis. The study represented that arsenicosis occurs epidemically maximum in male, illiterate persons, appearance 30-40 age groups and the family size is ≥4. The effects of arsenic toxicity on human nutrition and the economical tool on society have not been well studied in Bangladesh. Our observations shows that the most serious disorders of the arsenic affected patients are black spot, lung problem, appetite and etching. But about some symptoms of arsenicosis especially hair fall, edema, peripheral neuropathy etc. are less common in female than male. It also found that children are totally free from arsenicosis. Most females suffer arsenicosis after their marriage and the average marriage age was around 16 years. Other disorders are palpitation, loss of body weight, urination, eye problem etc. Approximately 88% patients are suffering from weakness and males are more weakness than females. This alarming situation called for rapid action in both the affected areas in order to saves not only thousands but also million of affected lives in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To find out the life style of the arsenic affected patients and try to find out the absolute etiology collaborating with the socioeconomic status of a family. and

Methodology:

Survey process: Among the several types of study design cross sectional study was conducted. Fifty patients were enrolled in this prospective in situational review board approved study. Of the patient enrolled, 33 were male and 17 were female. Arsenicosis complications were the most frequent causes of drinking water. A detailed physical examination and Dietary history were done the various infections and infestations associated with arsenicosis were evaluated by details history and clinical examinations. The survey form was prepared in two sections. The first part was conducted in order to assess dietary history and the second part was prepared for clinical examination. A questionnaire was developed to obtain relevant information on anthropometric data, dietary information, health information and socio-economic condition.

Information on date of birth, monthly family income, patients educational status possession of expensive household articles, knowledge about safe drinking water and duration of arsenicosis injury, treatment it were collected using a structured questionnaire in gender basis several age group. Clinical examinations were assessed through the appearance of physical sign and symptoms as well as laboratory findings in collecting sample of nails, hair and drinking water.

Study design

It was a cross-sectional study among arsenicosis patients household. Patients were selected randomly. The total sample size was fifty and the survey carried out March to June-2008.

Study Area

A pilot survey was conducted among the arsenicosis patient household in five villages at Kalaroa thana in Satkhira district and Damurhuda thana in Chaudanga district, Bangladesh.

Achievement/Findings:

Large number of people in the in the survey area showing critical arsenic poisoning. However, insufficient education, poverty, lack of awareness and ineffective health care support are major factors causing immense plight to severely arsenic affected people. There is no doubt that not only in the working area but also all over the Bangladesh arsenicosis is the greater environmental disaster in the human history and also a rigid challenge to a very successful public health problem. Though different NGOs, national and international organization are working to provide safe drinking water to the people, but still there not enough technology which are economically affordable to exposed people, technically feasible and environmentally sustainable. Therefore, it is very important to take action of affordable and flexible arsenic policy collaborating with all organization and public sentiment immediately.
