Helminth Parasites in Anabas Testudineus (bloch, 1792)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of seven species of helminth parasites of Anabas testudineus was collected among which three species were trematodes: Neopecoelina saharanpurensis, Ptychogonimus megastomus, Brevicreadium congeri; and four species were nematodes: Zeylanema anabantis, Z. bidigitalis, Metaquimperia madhuai, and Gnathostoma spinigerum. Most of the parasites were found in the intestine. Only G. spinigerum were collected from the liver. The overall prevalence of infection of the parasites of A. testudineus was 90% and the intensity was 3.33. The prevalence was higher (100%) in male fishes than in female fishes (84%) the intensity was equal in both the male and female fishes (3.33). The prevalence (90%) and intensity (2.78) of trematodes were highest among the parasite groups. Both the prevalence and intensity were highest in the intermediate length and weight groups of fishes.

Objectives:

To provides information about the helminth parasitic infestations in A. testudineus in rainy season.

Methodology:

Forty fishes were examined during the study period on a monthly basis at regular intervals from July 2000 to October 2000. Among them 15 were males and 25 were females. The females were separated from the males by looking to their swollen abdomens filled with eggs. But, in case of young fishes, gonads were removed and observed under the microscope for the presence of eggs or sperms. The fishes were divided into three length groups: (8.5-10 cm), (10.1-11.6 cm) and (11.7-13.2 cm), and three weight groups: (15-25 g), (26-36 g) and (37-47 g). The external surface, gills, skin, fins and scales of the fishes were carefully observed by a magnifying glass for ectoparasites. The viscera was separated from body and differentiated into esophagus, stomach, intestine and rectum. These organs were collected and split open by a pair of scissors for endoparasitic helminths. The trematodes were fixed in acetic formalin alcohol for 5-10 minutes. The worms were then preserved in 70% ethyl alcohol. Hot glacial acetic acid was used to fix the nematodes. The fixative was added to a petri dish containing the parasites to relax and to straighten the body of the worm. The parasites were kept for few minutes in lactophenol for clearing. Then, the worms were preserved in 70% ethyl alcohol. The parasites were stained by borax carmine. The temporary slides were made by mounting in lactophenol. Permanent slide of the parasites except nematodes were mounted in Canada balsam.

The highest prevalence (90%) and intensity (2.78) were observed in intestine. The highest prevalence of parasites were found in the intestine. Among the parasites, Metaquimperia madhuai showed the highest prevalence (32.5%) and intensity (4.92); among the trematode parasites Ptychogonimus megastomus showed the highest prevalence (27.5%). But, Akther (1995) found no Ptychogonimus megastomus in A. testudineus. Among different length groups, both prevalence (95.25%) and intensity (4.05) were the highest in the intermediate length group. The smaller length group of A. testudineus became highly affected and larger length group became less affected. Among different weight groups both prevalence (96.15%) and intensity (3.52) were also the highest in the intermediate weight group. The intermediate size group was more infected by the parasites than the smaller and the larger size groups. The overall prevalence of infection of the parasites of A. testudineus was 90% and the intensity was 3.33. The prevalence was higher (100%) in male fishes than in female fishes (84%) the intensity was equal in both the male and female fishes (3.33). The prevalence (90%) and intensity (2.78) of trematodes were highest among the parasite groups. Both the prevalence and intensity were highest in the intermediate length and weight groups of fishes.
