Genetic Divergence in Linseed (linum Usitatissimum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A group of 24 elite genotypes were evaluated in order to identity most divergent dual puropse genotypes for utilization in hybridization with 13 quantitative characters including seed and fibre yield at Dholi Farm. Bihar, India during Rabi 1992-93. The range of D² values from 9.02 to 746.89 indicated the presence of possible genetic divergence in the population. Divergence analysis grouped these genotypes into six clusters. Clustering pattern indicated no relationship between genetic diversity and geographical distribulion of genotype. The highest intra-cluster distance was observed in cluster (√D² = 7. 90) comprised of 16 genotypes. Intra- duster distances were zero in duster IV. V and VI as they had single genotype. The highest inter-cluster distance was in between cluster-Il and III (√D²= 23.13) indicated maximum exploitation of heterosis on hybridzation.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi 1992-93 at Dholi Research Farm, Bihar, India. Twenty four elite genotypes, were evaluated in RCBD with 4 replications for 13 quantitative characters-days to first flowering plant height (total and technical), basal diameter, primary branches, number of capsules. days to maturity, seed yield (per plant and hectare) straw yield per hectare, seed test weight, fibre yield (per plant and hectare).Unit plot was 4 rows of two metre length. Row to row distance was 30 cm and plant spacing was maintained around 5-6 cm. Observations were recorded for ten quantitative characters on per plant basis and for three characters on plot average basis. After analysis of variance and covariance. the data were subjected to multivariate analysis, given by Mahalanobis. the D² statistic. First, D² values of all the individual populations in (n-1 ) combinations were arranged in ascending order. After formation of the cluster on the, basis of D² values, the average intra-cluster D² values were obtained by the formula di² = sum of the distances between all possible combinations (n) of the populations included in a cluster. Achievement/Findings:

The present study showing no relationship between genetic diversity and geographical distribution of the genotypes indicated the availability of genetic diversity in types from same geographical origin. It may be due to frequent movement of plant material through introduction. Varieties developed at the same place have different genetic make-up. The genetic distance between two clusters including the varieties of same pedigree may be greater than the clusters having varieties derived from distinct types. It can be concluded that genetic drift and selection in different environments could cause greater diversity than geographic distance.
