Growth and Yield Performance of Exotic Potted Gerbera Cultivars (gerbera Jamesonii L.) in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to investigate the growth and yield performance of different exotic Gerbera cultivars in pot cultivation during the period from January 2010 to April 2011 at Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Five different colored flowering exotic Gerbera cultivars (C₁; White; C₂; Brick red; C₃; Light pink; C₄; Yellow and C₅; Orange) were used under this experiment in complete randomized design (CRD) with five replications. Significant variations of growth and flower yield performances with in the cultivars were recorded. Maximum leaf number per plant, longest peduncle with biggest flowers were produced by the orange colored (C₅) flowered plant and smallest from white colored (C₁) flowered plants. Similarly, maximum flowers (15.9) per plant were produced by C₅ and the lowest (12.5) from C₁. On the other hand, yellow color flowered (C₄) plant started early flowering (14.7 DAT) in comparing to other cultivars.

Objectives:

1. The present study was conducted to observe the varietal performances of gerbera in Bangladesh as pot cultivation.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from January 2010 to April 2010. The experiment was laid out with five different colored gerbera cultivars (White flower; C₁, Pink flower; C₂, Light pink flower; C₃, Yellow flower; C₄, and Orange flower; C₅.) in complete randomized design (CRD) with five replications. Gerbera cultivars were collected from local nursery. Recommended chemical fertilizers (NPK as 5, 10, and 5 g in each pot) and cowdung were mixed with the soil. Pots were prepared 3 days before transplanting and after the days, single seedling was planted in single pot according to the cultivars. Data were collected in respect of number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, peduncle length, peduncle width, diameter of flower bud, diameter of flower, days to bud initiation and flower per plant from each pot with in the mentioning period. Leaf area was measured by using CL-202 leaf area meter. Collected data for various characters were statistically analyzed using MSTAT program. Mean for all the treatments was calculated and the analysis of variance for each of the characters was performed by F test. Difference between treatments was evaluated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.
