The research work was conducted with 10 rice germplasm during T. Aman (wet season), 2004, at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur, to assess the different lodging concerned parameters and their interrelationships. A great extent of diversity among aromatic rice genotypes was observed in respect to canopy architecture and lodging related characters. Minimum seedling height was 30 cm for BRRI dhan39 and the maximum was 47 cm for Hatisail. Variations were found in the cultivars regarding penultimate and flag leaf angles and dimensions of both the leaves. Maximum plant height was recorded to be 153 cm in Baoi jhak and the minimum was 100 cm in BRRI dhan28. The longest panicle was observed in Nizersail (27 cm) and shortest in Hatisail (21 cm). The range of culm diameter was 4.0–4.7 mm and culm thickness was 0.40–0.51 mm. Rice cultivars varied for bending moment from 812 g . cm (BRRI dhan28) to 2263 g . cm (Doiar guro). Lodging index was at a minimum 2.7 in BRRI dhan28 and a maximum 11.28 in Sugandha-1. Plant height exhibited positive correlation with panicle exertion and internode lengths, and hence lodging index. Lodging index was found to have a negative relationship with breaking strength. In path analysis, bending moment projected highest positive direct effect on lodging index.

  1. To obtain basic information on lodging-related traits in different aromatic rice genotypes of Bangladesh
  2. To find out linear relationships and interdependence among the parameters
  3. To explore the possibility of improvement of local aromatic rice germplasm.

The experiment was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur, in T. Aman season, 2004. A total of 10 germplasm were selected for this research. Seven genotypes – Baoi jhak, Begun bichi, Doiar guro, Hatisail, Jira katari, Kataribhog and Philippine katari – were from the scented rice group. BRRI dhan28 is a modern Boro variety, BRRI dhan39 is a modern T. Aman variety and Nizersail is a local improved variety. These three were included as checks. Thirty day-old seedlings were transplanted on 15 August 2004 following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Ten rice genotypes formed the treatment variables and were assigned randomly to each unit plot of 5 x 2 m dimension. Transplanting was carried out at the spacing of 20 X 20 cm. A fertilizer rate of 25–35–10– 3 kg ha-1 of P–K–S–Zn in the form of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulfate, respectively, was applied as basal dose at final land preparation. Because of wide genotypic variations in phenological development and yield potential, varieties differed enormously in attaining panicle initiation (PI) stage and in the requirement of nutrient elements. For this reason, nitrogen was top-dressed as urea in 2–3 splits to the contrary of a common dose with fixed time routine. The amount of urea and time of application were determined with the help of a leaf colour chart (Ladha et al. 1998). Seedling height was measured at 30 DAS in the seedbed just before uprooting. Just after heading, 10 randomly selected plants were cut at culm base. They were put into a bucket dipping bases into water to restore the turgidity and then various data were recorded. Culm diameter and the thickness of culm wall were measured with the help a digital verneer caliper at mid-point of the culm. The center of gravity, the point to endure load, was measured as the distance in cm from base to that point at dough stage. The rate of centre of gravity is the ratio of centre of gravity to plant height (expressed as a percentage). Randomly selected 10 plants in dough stage were cut at base and their fresh weight was measured on precision balance for the calculation of bending moment as follows (Hoshikawa and Wang 1990). Panicle exertion (the exposed upper portion of the top most internode) was measured as the distance between the panicle base point and the junction of flag leaf sheath and blade on the culm. The breaking strength was measured in grams mid-way of the third internode from the top to bottom (Kim 1998). Lodging index (LI) was calibrated with the ratio of bending moment to braking strength as described by Seko (1962). LI ¼ Bending moment Braking strength Data were subjected to several statistical analysis to interpret the result.

Plant height exhibited positive correlation with panicle exertion and internode lengths, and hence lodging index. Lodging index was found to have a negative relationship with breaking strength. In path analysis, bending moment projected highest positive direct effect on lodging index. Wider genetic variability among the cultivars confirmed the possibility of plant type improvement through successful breeding programme
