The average homestead area of the fishers was 8.75 decimal. Among the fishers’, 66.66% were illiterate while 16.66% had primary education and another 16.66% can sign only. In sanitation, 95% households used katcha latrine. In the community, 41.67% were nuclear family and 58.33% were joint family. The highest number (46%) of the fishers’ annual income ranged between 50,000 and 75,000 BDT. In case of social status, 80% were ordinary persons and only 5% were local leaders. Major constraints and AIGAs of the fishers’ livelihood were identified. 1. The objectives of the current study was to investigate the livelihood status of the local fishers’ community, to investigate the constraints & threats to their livelihood sources and to identify the potentials of alternative income generating activities of Nijhum Dwip Island.

The present study was carried out on the fishers’ community of Nijhum Dwip Island in Hatiya upazila under Noakhali district in Bangladesh during the period between15 February and 14 July, 2010. Collection of data - The study was based on collection of primary and secondary data. Before collecting the primary data, a draft questionnaire was developed which was pre-tested with a few fishermen. In the pre-testing, much attention was given to any new information in the draft questionnaire in order to reach the objectives of the study. According to the experience gained in pre-testing, the final questionnaire was improved, rearranged and modified. The final questionnaire included the questions on the socio-economic condition, types of fishermen, income of fishermen, family size, family members, factors affecting the livelihood sources etc. of the fishermen. Primary data were collected through Household survey using multiple methodological Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools such as Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Crosscheck Interviews (CI) with key informants. Land used data of the studied area, subject related annual reports and documents were also collected to validate the field observation. Thus, 50 fishermen were interviewed at Nijhum Dwip on various aspects of livelihood status of the fishermen. Data analysis - All the collected information were accumulated and analyzed by MS-Excel and then presented in textual, tabular and graphical forms to understand the present status of the livelihood status and constraints of the fishermen of the studied island.
